"Pete just seemed like the odd man out. So him learning the secret was something that we decided we needed to do in order to give that character a function on the show. He was great! I admit on my first watch, I was super disappointed at Pete's original reaction of distrust, anger and even feelings of betrayal - not to mention that line about him not being human - (cuz I had pictured Pete instantly accepting Clark and the conflict would arise cuz maybe he wouldn't get the weight of the secret) but now I get why the writers went this way instead. Plus it serves to add to Clark's trauma growing up, who he can/can't share with, and the consequences. It all starts w Pete, and Sam Jones does a great job.

Ryan was cracking me up on this episode of Talkville! (Remember my paperweight?) And he was spot on with the "But is Pete really Clark's best friend?" I believe that that is exactly what happened until I hear evidence to the contrary. It's bad luck for Pete cause they wrote him as such a blank. He had nothing to work with. Allison got to be a kid Detective/ reporter. There's a lot to chew on there.

Regarding Pete's BFF relationship with Clark... I'd have agreed with your statement if it wasn't for Chloe's 'investigative reporter' persona, and her 'accessibility' to information that always proves useful to Clark. I cannot imagine how or where Pete would be useful in that regard. Plus, Chloe-Lana-Clark triangle sounds easier to write about than a Pete-Lana-Clark triangle. If Pete was the editor of the Torch and knew about Clark's secret from first grade, now that would've been a cool set up.

Actually one of my favorite moments in this episode is when Clark reaches out to Pete trying to comfort him and Pete pulls away from him not wanting Clark to touch me. Not only because he doesn't trust him anymore (as he found out that Clark lied to him) but knowing of his powers now, he's actually afraid of him. There is a beat when Clark just looks at Pete, a little surprised and a little hurt, before he very calmly says, "Pete, I would never hurt you." I love that moment. Beautifully played by Welling.

I just rewatched that scene to see what you're talking about. It's actually very realistic. I've been in that position before: someone (that I had no foreknowledge of them being anywhere near the car) unexpectedly moving right in front of the car I was driving. (They were not seriously injured.) Your brain is still processing what's actually happening while your body is on auto-pilot. They appear in front of the car and my mind goes: 'Wait. What is that? Is that a person? What is that? What's happening?' And then the brakes are hit. (Absolute confusion and then dawning realization, because it's totally unexpected and it's not like it was a person up ahead that I'm watching that suddenly jumped in front of my car - I've also had that happen and was able to miss this person with quick reflexes - yes, it was a suicidal person or some idiot that somehow thought it was a clever way of suing somebody.) Like Pete looking in his rearview mirror, I was looking elsewhere (making a right turn, pressing the gas to move forward looking to my left again to make sure another car isn't coming and then looking back to where I'm going and suddenly a person is just there that wasn't there literally a second ago - the mind is just processing, before it can react, the appearance of this thing, this object, a person on a bike with their back to me, that's somehow already less than two feet from the front of my moving car). In short: It's exactly what would happen. Very realistic. Pete's awareness is still calculating Clark suddenly being in front of his car (when he was just way behind) and his mind needs to process what he's seeing before his body can even react.

I'm with Ryan, it is so nice to finally see Pete with some purpose, he has felt so underused up until this point. It was also nice that he was first to know the big secret, when it could have easily been Chloe or Lana. I loved how surprised Ryan was that someone found out about Clark's secret, it was good to see a fresh reaction - I hardly remember what happens in Smallville at all, but I did know that at some point Pete knows! 😄 I think it was definitely time too, there is only so many times Clark can disappear or make excuses before it begins to get tired, I don't blame Lana for getting annoyed with him for hiding stuff, he is so bad a hiding stuff, always looks so guilty and shifty 😄It is good that they changed the dynamic slightly in this episode. You know, I like your perspective on Clark and Pete. I think by default he’s s’posed to be Clark’s “best friend”, but there’s more evidence of Chloe, even Lana, filling that role for Clark in S1 than Pete given less to do. It’s odd that for the character, knowing the secret could be in step with an increased role, but for the actor it may have been a clue he was due for an exit per their suppositions on the pod today.

It was just inevitable that Pete would find out Clark's secret. He's a character straight from the comics. A best friend of Clark's who knows his secret. Thinking back on it, I'm kind of surprised it took the creative team this long for Pete to discover who Clark really is. The crazy thing that I've read about Pete in the comics, though, is that he eventually becomes Vice President of the United States, under Lex Luthor. Let that sink in.

I just started watching Smallville because of seeing a short clip of this show (Talkville) my FB feed. But as a 39 year old man, I think the reason most people got into this show back in the early 2000’s because the timing that this show came out in was the perfect time. We as America was very Pro-America/Pro-Hero and this show kind of encapsulated the American Dream in a way especially for kids but also this show was really the first of its kind that spoke to most of us born in the 80’s that were going thru high school at the time. Also the storyline was amazing. Watching this show for the first time, it makes me WANT to have my kids watch it with me. My Kids are teenagers now but I feel like this has a lot of good morals and good content that most shows nowadays lack.

I really love this episode, Duplicity it's one of my favorites from Season 2. I love the brotherly friendship between Clark and Pete and I really love the multitude of feelings between Clark and Pete in this episode. In Clark there is sadness, fear, regret, the distress of feeling different and inadequate and the fear of not being accepted for one's otherness, made worse when the people who may not accept you are people you love and who you think they love you back like in this case. And in Pete there is anger, resentment, the feeling that his best friend/brother didn't trust him enough. But in both there is finally the love that always fixes everything in the end.♥️ And even if it means more risk for Pete and more concern for Clark, what could be better than sharing a heavy burden and your own inner loneliness with someone else? The weight of the burden is reduced from 100% to 50%.🙂 Great new Talk Ville episode. Love you Tom, Michael and Ryan❤❤❤. Thank you so much.🌹🌹🌹for me.

Season 2 is the start of Lana changing from the sweet and innocent character from season 1 into a manipulative person, and it's so damn subtle and done so well. The obsession with the fact that Clark has a secret that he's not telling her, and in just about every episode (that she's in) from here until she finds out, she says small little things to try and get him to tell her his secret without making it obvious that she's doing it. Like seriously, at least once per episode interactions, she says something like "Well I'm always here if you wanna talk about anything", with that hidden agenda ever so slightly dripping from it. Even just the look in her eyes saying "Like your secret. Just tell me your damn secret." Lmao. She slowly starts to feel so much like she's entitled to his secret, which is honestly how an emotionally immature teenager would react. Kristen plays the part so damn well.

Great great episode. This was always one of my favorite episodes. I actually look it up on KZitem and watch it every once in awhile. Pete's reaction to Clark telling him he's an alien, I thought, was perfect. Sam played Pete like he was in shock that his best friend kept this secret from him AND finding out he's an alien, I believe he totally forgot how they grew up and just reacted with the "Don't touch me" reaction. I enjoyed how Tom and Sam played the broken friendship as well. Clark really thought that Pete would be more understanding but it didn't go as planned. When Pete was confronted by Dr. Hamilton though, Pete knew that he had to protect Clark and that scene was incredible to watch. I've like watching Joe Morton since Terminator 2. He's such a great actor and always gives his best. The best part of this episode was when Pete asked Clark why he tried to save Dr. Hamilton. This was such a great episode and I would have to give it 2 1/2 roses because it showed that no matter what, Pete and Clark had a great friendship.

I hope you will get Sam on the podcast soon! At 20:47 Michael spoke facts it's indeed a problem that women have with men. Gunn hasn't said this is what it is yet. the problem with James Gunn (lack of plan) so far is firing Cavil, suggests a reboot, keeping other actors as their characters Ezra or other regardless of issue - suggests NOT a reboot. you either KEEP Cavil. or you completely reboot. you can't do both, and considering the baggage of the Snyder cut (WHICH I LOVE) a fresh start is required. WHICH MEANS A FULL FRESH START WHOLE REBOOT. you make Lanterns like star wars - create a galactic universe with context and layers for characters and worlds and stories. LIKE STAR WARs. you create stories and history for a NEW batman and a new superman - HOW. well create superman in the 50s (like cap america) and then have his trilogy stories with lois with other villains. In the 50s and 60s. jump to BATMAN - Flash and other heroes in the 90s - and SUPERMAN is still around still LOOKING LIKE SUPERMAN - new love interest WW bacuse lois is dead - and bring in the world ending and galazy ending and universe ending treats outside of the solo and personal Batman and Flash films. etc THIS IS WHAT HE HAS TO DO. but has yet to announce anything. and my issue is he won't announce anything as awesome as what i could think of in 10 min.

- I disagree, I think Lana was kind of awful to Clark. After what Whitny did to him she not only didn't dump him, but would later hold it against Clark for not being cool with Whitney later. Imgine telling a girl who was stripped and strung up in their underwear in a field later that she was being a bitch for not letting it go and being cool with the people who did it. Then she straight up does dump Whitney when he's in a bad place and she immediately goes to Clark and expects him to just instantly open his heart to her and share how he really feels (which better be how amazing she is and how he'd be lucky to have her) when they are basically all to young and confused to know how they feel and constantly just emoting every little emotion you have and expecting validation seems unhealthy and only something you could get away with regularly as an attractive girl or already rich and taken care of boy.

Sounds like Pete took the guy to the hospital. He said he gave the Sheriff unclear about where the car was. That’s why they had to get the spaceship out of there.

I'm so excited you guys are doing this. Smallville is still my favorite. I've gone back to binge watch the entire series at least 7 times since the finale was aired. I love how the show itself grows every season, not just the characters and actors playing them. The visuals, the stunts, the plots and storyline get better and better each season. Thank you guys for this podcast. I love hearing your opinions on the story being told in each episode and your experiences making them. 👏👏👏👏

In Clarks defense, telling Pete his secret, while strengthening their friendship, it also put Pete in a lot more danger and gave Clark another weakness. First obviously being green kryptonite, then his parents, then Lana, and now Pete. Cause what was the first thing that happened to Pete? Hamilton had a feeling he knew who’s ship it was. So, he kidnapped Pete, more or less tortured him, and almost killed him. All in pursuit of Clark’s secret. And that’s not including the crap Pete goes through throughout the rest of his time on the show. Being a superhero I have no doubt would be very awesome cause of the powers and what not. But you also have to be ridiculously careful. If you notice, every time Clark let his guard down even in the smallest way, it put him and people he loved in danger. Even if not physical, but exploitative danger. Jonathan may have been a bit harsh at times, but he had Clark’s well being in mind 24/7 when it came to him publicly displaying his powers or telling someone his secret.

Pete's character didn't have much to do because of Chloe. If Pete was the conspiracy theorist who ran the Torch, then he would have had a lot more to do. Or at the very least make him the conspiracy theorist (like Mulder from the X-Files) while Chloe is basically Scully, a non-believer in the weird happenings in Smallville. Chloe squeezed Pete out of Smallville.

I got so used to Pete Ross in Smallville that I was thrown when he was a redhead in the Man of Steel movie. When I watch it I always catch myself thinking 'that's not Pete'. Smallville forms so much of my connection to Superman after the original with Christopher Reeves.

About guys not opening up. I've always been open with everyone, often people I just met. Surprisingly, I'm involved in business. Judging from what I've seen of Mike and Tom, Tom would have fun with me being so open, Mike would feel uncomfortable. See, Mike has a certain fear of intimacy. Tom is in a way yearning for affection, though not in a desperate way, it's just something that comforts him.

So I thought this was a solid episode. Usually I’m not crazy about when heroes give away their secret identities to people they care about because of what always happens as we see hundreds of times later in the series. It’s like Super-Hero 101 however I thought it was handled well. Pete’s reaction was expected and also explains why CK never told Lana. It also shows how strong his friendship with Pete is even though he disappears every other episode lol. My only issue was why didn’t the Kent’s go looking for the spaceship because they all knew it was out there cause I thought that was lazy. Because imagine if the government found that thing and they trace it to the Kent Farm. That could’ve been fun to see because the cops I guess don’t exist in Smallville lol.

My mom and I debate this... I think it's Clark's life. He'll tell people when he's ready and Lana should stop with the "I have to know everything about you" thing. My mom thinks that Clark should go around telling everyone and that keeping it a secret causes more harm than not
