If anyone's wondering how this work it's really simple. It shorts the battery which creates heat. The colors are just a temperature sensor!

Perhaps. I have a memory that makes me think of this as a potential fire hazard. My dad's toolbox had a few of those in it in their own drawer. For some reason the paper they were in caught fire. Wasn't a hot day, and the building is covered from the sun by trees. One of these strips must have had a _bad_ short from a bad batch or something because these were the only ones in that drawer that day. I would know, i stole a couple for my gameboy.

These things use liquid crystal fluid in a strip. The colors are always there, the LCD orients when the two spots are touched and it reveals the current state of charge.
