That's true, but unfortunately his big idea for breaking in America was to appeal to the teenyboppers. It worked - they became the biggest band in the WORLD by packing arenas full of screaming teenage girls - but it doomed them because once the teenyboppers grew out of liking their music, there wasn't any audience left. Adults thought they were a bubblegum band for pre-teen girls and the pre-teen girls had moved on to New Kids on the Block, etc. Even now when people talk about the big serious rock acts of the 1980s they talk about U2 and Culture Club and Spandau Ballet. If they mention Duran Duran at all it's as a video band. They still aren't considered a 'serious' adult band. That's a shame because they made some really great music before hitting it big in America.

most people dont know that john is the brain and driving force in dd but he was painfully shy back then he preferred to directing the band behind the scenes. john is the director of dd and simon is the "actor" until the record company decided to make john as the band's icon and sell him more than the other members in the band since EMI thought john is the best looking one in the band hence the best marketable, john became a superstar and being in a limelight most of the time as the record company deliberately used john and his magnificent good looks to promote and sell the band. His image as a pretty pin up boy was deliberately planned by the record company and because of that people often overlook his talent and his major role in duran, and somehow think john is nothing but an eye candy
@JC-yz1sf
4 жыл бұрын
I don’t think that’s necessarily true about EMI using John. Unless you have some first hand info from a label exec directly. Yes he was incredibly attractive but John, Simon and Nick always were extremely popular. Roger and Andy next. John and Nick were both extremity driven. They both were the ones who pushed and had high aspirations. I think it wasn’t long before all five were equally able to be interviewed and show how determined they were for success. Yes John was painfully shy at the beginning but he wasn’t the only one responsible for their success.
@c4test

@@JC-yz1sf Andy Taylor wrote in his book: EMI deliberately made John a pin up boy to sell and promote the band. EMI explained, “We are going to promote John first because he is the most photogenic." The record company had planned it that way and had pushed John into doing lots of interviews with Smash Hits, but they didn’t realize just quite how big it would become. John, in particular, was still being heavily pushed by the record company as a single man who made an ideal teenage pinup. The record company had deliberately pushed him into the spotlight because of his looks, and I think all the wild partying was his way of letting off steam. He was starting to get a staggering amount of female attention, much more than the rest of us. It was John who often found himself with the most girls on his arm, sometimes with outrageous consequences. John was very popular, and he just bounced in and out of girlfriends every few weeks. John Taylor said in an interview, When EMI saw the 5 polaroids of the band, EMI thought John the best looking one in the band hence the best marketable. John says in his book, EMI send the band's pictures to some of teen magazines, like smash hit and jackie, and the editor of jackie herself that chose John to be on the cover of their magazine. Even if you don't believe me, there are many proofs out there that can verify that. Every 80's generation knew John was a big icon and superstar in the 80's. His face was the staple of the magazines. He was the most popular and favourite member in duran. It's confirmed by all his band mates. All of the member of duran say, John got the most fans, the most girls, the loudest scream from the fans, and getting a staggering amount of female attention much more than the rest of the band. John appeared in magazines, TV shows, and interviews alot more than the rest of the band and became the spokesperson for the group. It was always John who won the magazine's polls and he was titled as the most beautiful man, most fanciable man, best looking man, most desirable human being, and best bass player for several years in a row.
@c4test

Of course John wasn't the only one responsible for their success but John is the brain and the architect of duran who formed the band, created the whole concept of the band, planning out, and determined to make Duran successful on a global scale, but ignorant people often disregard him and get the wrong idea of him just because he's a pretty boy. It was John who started the band with his friend David Twist. Then John formed duran with Stephen Duffy when John met him at the art college an asked Nick to join. John also the one who suggested Nick to get hold of a synthesizer and make that his instrument, because nick couldnt play any instrument at all so it's easier to use synthesizer than to teach nick how to play musical instrument such as guitar or piano. Nick’s mom, Sylvia, made a £200 purchase of the first Wasp synthesizer to arrive in Birmingham, at Woodroffe’s music store. John may be shy back then, but it doesn't mean he can't speak up. He didn't talk much in this interview because Nick was always interrupting and didn't give John a chance to talk. You can see very clearly in this video that Nick sort of ran John over when John started to talk. Nonetheless, John, in fact, is the brain and director of duran who's directing the band and comes up with the ideas that made duran achieve a massive success. The James Bond theme, the concept of their albums and the band's sound and look, all of it are John's creation. He makes the album cover, posters and their music. All his bandmates, including Robert Palmer and Tony Thompson, said John is their ideas man who makes the concept of the band and their music. He's the key to their sound. Duran's songs are all bass driven and all of their hits like rio, girls on film, wild boys, planet earth, a view to a kill and even their latest songs are marked by John's basslines and that's what draw people to Duran.

One-piece Fortest yes, I remember all of this. I was a fan when they came on the scene in 1982 on MTV. I didn’t read Andy’s book so I don’t doubt that happened with John being pushed as a pin up. I remember John in his book or in an interview him saying they were inadvertently pushed as pin ups. Then it just took off. But in the US whether it was intentional or not there were just as many pics, centerfolds and interviews with Nick and Simon as John.
@c4test

@@JC-yz1sf I’m not saying that the other members of Duran didn’t appear in magazines but statistically John featured on magazines cover and interviews a lot more than other members of Duran. John was notorious as a pin up boy whose photos were pinned on the bedroom walls of thousands of teenagers. Smash Hits 1982 edition with John on the cover in a swimming pool was the biggest selling issue. John always won a lot of best looking contests or polls. John Taylor was dubbed by people's poll as the most fanciable person for several years in a row and the second most wonderful human being alive (behind Bob Geldof).

That's an incredible video - I spent time in the Rum Runner when it was the last nightclub along that road (don't even remember it being called Broad Street) you went down a little alley and into this glamourous club but for all the mirrors and palm trees I was most impressed that at midnight you could still buy chilli con carne! Oh how sophisticated we thought we were. Brum was a strange mix in those days - a big working class city but town felt quite small and people drank in a few regular places - The Crown for punks, the bier Keller, Sam Wellers (early licence - 5.30 on a Friday) and Kalaiedescope downstairs, Snobs, Edwards, Peppermint Place, Faces International to name a few - then the night service bus home or some strange estate if you pulled a girl and got her bus home - always seeming to have to find your way home on a winter morning. I'm sure for some, Birmingham was a stepping stone to London stardom, but for many of us it was 4 hours of pretending we were the bright young things until the factory whistles called us to Monday morning's reality. Still the best days ever though ✊

I'm sorry to find that they didn't, ultimately, stick to keeping politics out of their music, public appearances and, worst of all, haven't kept them out of their concerts. Unfortunately, they didn't keep to this ideal. Just last August 2022, they had to get on the Ukraine bandwagon JUST before doing Save A Prayer. I was SO very disappointed. Not everyone is all on the bandwagon that Ukraine's government is a victim. The whole situation there is VERY nuanced. It takes a person who's read up on the history there between Ukraine and Russsia to understand this. I CERTAINLY didn't want to be lectured about it or how I needed to and/or should be backing Ukraine at a Duran Duran concert last summer 2022. Please don't do this AGAIN this Saturday in Detroit, September 16, 2023. Please, I beg the band NOT to go there!

The truth about John Taylor is that he is very much a leader in his own right however he is not one who loves to be the center of attention as a frontman would. When John shows interest in something his intense passion drives him and his people skills coupled with enthusiasm help to sell an idea then galvanize those people around him to get things done. John had a very clear idea of the success pathway he set for Duran with it's pinnacle of them headlining Madison Square Garden by 1984 which they did achieve exactly however beyond that he admitted in a 2008 article he hadn't thought it out past at that age. Nick always seemed to have a much longer art driven idea of what he thought Duran should be. Both John and Nick are very eerily similar like true Gemini twins with their love for art, aesthetic beauty, taste in clothes, music, wit, intelligence and image for Duran. However Nick is very cool headed, analytical and displayed quiet confidence within himself without shyness very young whereas John, full of ambition and very clear set ideas, wanted success, achievement and recognition but had a great temper, involved himself heavily into drink and drugs, and very often would second guess his own musical concepts and struggled terribly with the reality the consequence of being center of attention as the top pinup not only within the band but surpassing other celebrities from other musical acts and entertainment genres due to his intense sex appeal, which can be quite hard when one suffers from shyness. Plus his looks by default drew so much attention in of themselve without him even trying. Just imagine the stir he would have caused had he sought attention like a true frontman...the sex appeal I think would have been too much to handle by the public and probably would have killed him. Many years later John would often interview people for his now longtime defunct website Trust The Process one of whom was somgwriter/producer Johnathan Elias who said during the making of the Big Thing album that the biggest difference between John and Nick was that when Nick would produce musical ideas he would run with them. When John would produce his musical ideas which Elias stated were quite plentiful and very good, he would often second guess them only to dismiss and abandon them to start all over again. So John is very much an ideas man. This interview is very misleading. Just because a person talks the least during an interview doesn't prove a lack of ideas and those who talk the most aren't proving they hold all the cards. It's too painful to see someone as beautiful as John Taylor for many of us still to accept he might be more than eye candy. To acknowledge there was a thinking man underneath that exceptionally pretty exterior who demonstrated natural musicianship with great vision, drive, humor, wit, intelligence, writing talent and intense sensitivity seems too unfair. His accomplishments always being questioned.

I agree.. however I do think part of Johns appeal was his lack of desire to be the front man, his shyness and his “not in your face” attitude made him even more attractive. I think had he been cocky and expecting the attention, it would’ve been a turn off to many. Also the individuals as they were really came across as genuine as well which we (their fans, even as young teenagers), could get a good sense of. They were well spoken, all ambitious, really sexually attractive in their own way and so so talented!!! It’s true John was the most popular but they all had devoted fans. It wasn’t all about John. Simon had/has massive sexual energy, the perfect front man. And those lips!! Nick perfected the masculinity in wearing make up in addition to his incredible creative mind, Roger was like the quiet strong super attractive male and Andy, the rocker with gorgeous blue eyes about to combust at any moment. Yes, John was jaw dropping gorgeous but he is deep and such an incredibly strong soul in his sobriety, still ambitious and kind. They are so brilliant and sadly still so underrated. But have some of the most loyal fans any artist has ever had... because we know the truth! ❤️

@@JC-yz1sf I’ve always been more attracted to the guys with quiet self confidence and have never been into front men of bands. Hence, my long running affinity for bass players, John being my first ‘love’. I’m married to a bass player now. All the talent, passion & drive without the flashy need for constant affirmation of the spotlight.

@@MK-Hogan yes!! If only they knew their fans thought about them with such intensity and respect. I hope they do anyway. ❤️ I’m married to a Gemini who is very similar. Crazy ambitious, charismatic, and charming but he does drive me crazy at times lol!

Weird that it wasn't until Ordinary World forced a collective re-analysis of the band's back catalogue that people suddenly realised they were playing kickass music all through the eighties and weren't just "eye candy". They could all play, amazingly. NME dismissing them out of hand because of their popular appeal said more about NME.

Yeah, but Simon has changed since then. Because in the early 2000s he started talking bad about our President. If you read the book Andy Taylor wrote, he talks all about it and how upset he, Roger and Nick were about it. Bcs Simon didnt tell any of them that he was going to talk bad abt President Bush. And he shdnt have done that bcs it made the rest of the band look bad bcs they didnt feel the same way as Simon.

Roger and John were also both Taylors in Birmingham. Andy is Taylor as well, but unlike his fellow Taylors, he is not a Brummie.
