Long known as one of the most famous tourist railroads in the US, the Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad is known for its spectacular scenery and historic collection of narrow gauge steam locomotives. However, growing service requirements led to the purchase of additional equipment for the railroad. In 2020, the railroad purchased 4 narrow gauge diesel locomotives from the White Pass & Yukon Route in Skagway, Alaska. The four engines were built in 1969 by the American Locomotive Company (ALCO), and now operate on tourist trains out of Durango.
In this vide, we spend a couple days in Durango, and view these historic diesel engines making their daily run to Silverton. The daily diesel train leaves Durango at 8:15 AM, and returns at 5:30 PM.
