Grace Njoki, popularly known as Ka-Nguniu, narrates how her family was repatriated by the colonial authorities from Nanyuki to Mathira, and how she joined Mau Mau fighters in the forest. She served mainly as a Mau Mau spy. Her nickname or code name, Ka-Nguniu, was given to her by Mau Mau soldiers, and it means "of Nguniu" or the "girl from Nguniu," in memory of her role in saving Mau Mau fighters from at place called Nguniu. In this incidence, she tells of how Mau Mau fighters were surrounded by colonial forces and attacked. Three Mau Mau fighters were killed. The rest depended on her as she led them through an escape route across the Sagana river and into relative safety. In another incidence, four Mau Mau generals came to gather intelligence at her village. They were Gen. China from Nyeri, Gen. Wanyoike from Kiambu, Gen. Bata Batu and Gen. Kariba from Murang'a. Unfortunately, they were betrayed and an attack ensued. They however escaped unscathed to fight another day. She tells of another battle, in which the Mau Mau attacked Kamatu police station but were repelled. She was right there in the middle of it all. Earlier, in Dol Dol, she had been beaten so badly by a Samburu policeman whom she had refused to marry. Clearly, during war, beauty is a burden. Fortunately, she was saved by two kind policemen, a Kamba and a Nandi. She also tells of the harrowing survival in a colonial detention camp. #maumau #kenya #africanhistory #africa #africanliberation.
