This thing is massive! That startup is beautiful. I don't think I've ever truly appreciated that before, but now I do! Not to mention, no one gets to see a self-ballasting lamp do it's thing everyday, and most wouldn't know or give a second thought. Spectacular engineering, and thank you for the video!

120 volt self ballasted mercury lamps have a heater filament next to one or both of the electrodes that is in series with the ballast filament, or filaments, and a thermal switch. The heater facilitates in vaporizing the mercury which will allow and arc to be established in the arc tube, Once the desired temperature is reached, the thermal switch will open allowing the arc tube and ballast filament to operate in series. The heater filament will also be turned off once the thermal switch opens. 240 volt self ballasted mercury lamps do not have the heater filament as the main voltage is high enough to start the lamp. These 240 volt lamps do have a starting probe and resistor just like a regular mercury lamp.

A more accurate term for this awesome bulb would be cool white incandescent. I found this in my 2006 GE lamp catalog and the initial lumens are 14,000. 11,200 mean lumens, 3900K 50 CRI and 16,000 hour rated life. That averages out 15 lumens per watt. 16,000 hrs is short for a mercury vapor lamp and is almost certainly limited to the life of the filaments. Some mercury vapor lamps have been in service for over 20 years and lasted much longer than the manufacturers quote.

My old GE SBMW sunlamp has a tapped ballast filament with a snap switch which opens part of the filament after starting. I believe it is used as a starting aid. The popping sound it makes can be a bit unsettling at first.
@randacnam7321

That switch actually shorts out part of the ballast filament once the lamp has warmed up enough, as the mercury discharge tube only drops around 20V right when the arc starts.

The Duro Test reflector lamp that you have here has an R57 envelope just so you know. The Philips Kleen Beam lamp has an R60 envelope. In addition, R57 incandescent reflector lamps were available in 500W, 750W, and 1000W ratings while R60 incandescent reflector lamps were available in 750W and 1000W ratings.

Self ballasted Mercury vapour bulbs look more like metal halide bulbs at full brightness
@Sparky-ww5re
Жыл бұрын
Obviously because the filament in a self ballasted mercury vapor adds some reds to the bluish mercury vapor color bringing the roughly 6000K closer to the 4000K typical for metal halide.

This singing is extremely bright, almost a spice, looking at the sun, even that the reflection on the ceiling and the walls were uncomfortable to look at. And the heat ….. just those two electrodes were just staggering%! It was almost quite powerful enough to admit the light of day and direct sunlight

Mogul base? Or medium base?
@Sparky-ww5re
Жыл бұрын
Mogul base. Lamps over 300 watts are required to use a mogul base. Many HID lamps over 100 watts use mogul. The largest HID lamp with medium base is a 200 watt metal halide. The smallest HID with mogul base is a 50 watt high pressure sodium.

They were mostly used in high bay downlight applications to replace high wattage incandescent bulbs. You would find these in warehouses, factories and other industrial facilities with high ceilings. They were designed to be used in “base up” installations.
