the big bummer about how referential the set is is that i think all the stuff they play straight is done great. the valgavoth cult all hits

Exactly my issue with it. I felt that Innistrad was missing a lot of stuff with spirits and nightmares and all of that stuff rules, but then you get interrupted by "Remember the 80s? Remember The Ring? Remember Ghostbusters?" and it's so fuckin lame.

Dragging the "Lessons" tab onto the screen during Meathook Massacre II was just *chef's kiss*

It’s kinda cute the overlords are sort of mechanically opposite of the glimmers

Are we just going to ignore the resemblance between Reluctant Role Model and Serge? kappa

Not sure I understand the hate for No Where To Run. I agree the wording is clunky, but don't think it plays fast and lose with the rules the way some feel Krenko Kopter does. Haven't very targeted workarounds been a feature throughout Magic's history?

Think the "saving grace" for the set is how good a lot of the art is. I think some of the properly original creations are excellent too

Why does the room Mechanic feel more like clue to me than anything in MKM?

I'm unreasonably excited for Fear of Lost Teeth. I love my 1 drop black value creatures, Shambling Ghast being my favorite, and I'm excited about the prospect of pointing the damage anywhere on death

1:48:32 Listen I'm not the biggest fan of how on the nose this set is as well but I still love Meathook Massacre II. The lore implications tickle my brain too much to not like it. I think if this was one of 3 incredibly too meta cards, it wouldn't be an issue for a lot of people. It's a mythic, it's based off of another mythic that joined the "Banned in Standard" club, and it is straight up a mechanical sequel and compliment to the original. But we were only able to get this card because of all the other extremely noticeable tropes in the set and that is sadly too big of a price to pay for a lot of people (me partially included) Actually listening to your self-stymied thoughts a little bit: I don't think they were TRYING to get a reaction out of it. MaRo said on Blogatog that this was the first name for the card during playtesting and they wanted to keep the name the entire time. Unless I'm misinterpreting what you meant. We'll get to this later

I loved New Capenna and even I thought it was a bit too on the nose with the 'this is just the thing from our Earth history' stuff. VHS tapes and cheerleaders and baseball and Ghostbuster tech are too much for me.

would it be possible to have the rewards not pop up directly in the centre of the screen, overtop of a card

I was so exited by the concept of this set until it was revealed to be a bunch of references and 80s movie pop culture stuff, I was expecting it to be more along the lines of cosmic horror set in a fantasy adjacent IP that’s more along the lines of magic. This looks like a black border un set along the lines of unfinity, but even more obtrusive into normal play. I’m not a purist or anything that wants everything to be on dominaria, I love when they explore new ideas and planes, but this doesn’t feel right.
