In this clip from our live show with Dustin Rhodes, The Natural describes in detail the initial call he had with Vince McMahon, not understanding the word androgynous, and the hilarious first time he tried on the Goldust costume. Dustin also reveals that a match with Savio Vega in Madison Square Garden helped him find his feet in the role. You can tell Dustin had fun making Kenny pay for talking shit about Savio Vega. There are a lot of guys in wrestling history who aren't appreciated for both their talent and their willingness to give to the industry by helping get other guys over, and who usually never get the credit they deserve except from the guys they worked with. Savio Vega would definitely be one of them. And Dustin himself is definitely one of the more underrated legends of the industry- Goldust was arguably the harbinger of the Attitude Era's edgy product, even before Mick Foley debuted with Mankind or Steve Austin became Stone Cold. And as much as he gets overshadowed in conversations by the main event draws like Hogan and Stone Cold and Cena, or the master workers like Michaels and Hart and Flair, he really is one of the best who ever lived, just like his legendary daddy- probably an all-time top 50 guy at least.

It made sense because of the rivalry Vega and Austin had in 1996. Austin beat Vega at WM12. Vega (disguised as the Carribean Kid) beat Austin on an episode of WWF Superstars. Then there was the In Your House: Beware of Dog 1 & 2 shows. The first Carribean Strap Match when the lights went out. Vega must win or be Ted DiBiase's chauffer. The second one upped the ante: Austin wins; Vega becomes the chauffer. Vega wins; DiBiase leaves the WWF.

Partially because 30 years ago the whole industry was the wild west. Vince didn't have a board of directors to answer to, he was the top of the pyramid. He stepped away as any sane person would, to have a life. Remember at the beginning they would run a & b shows and he would only show up to televised tapings and they were running 95% of the shows east of the Mississippi and hell east of Fort Wayne Indiana really. Linda stayed away from the traveling circus. The product caters to children and sponsors and have been that way for most of the promotion. To me what’s odd is levesque & Stephanies refusal to step away from the limelight and just go raise a family, nonstop on tv and traveling it’s really odd narcissistic behavior. Shane gets it and goes off to do other things even if related to the business.

I mean, ya gotta remember that Vince is in his mid 70s, I dont see too many folks that age being able to just hang with guys in their 20's and early '30s. Dustin is a fantastic, iconic wrestler. That gold dust gimmick made him a legend, but he'll always be " the natural " to me.his matches with Ricky steamboat, Barry Windham, Shane Douglas and Arnold Anderson was the stuff of legends

I've said this on other interviews and things like that but Dustin Rhodes is a phenomenal storyteller and his partner wrestling in WWE I cemented him as a Hall of Famer. People's opinion of Dustin leaving WWE for AEW was the best decision for him his family in his career so you got to respect that.

I always thought Golddust was a weirdo and never really cared for the character but when I seen Dustin perform in AEW the fist match him Vs cody huge fan now wish we would have seen more of what he could have done as himself in WWF/WWE

I don't like how the host showed so much contempt for Savio Vega in front of Dustin like that. Like, have your personal feelings about wrestlers you like and dislike, but have some respect for a man's col lieges as well. Like he was telling the story of how Savio helped him get this character over, explaining to him why he had respect for the man, and this clown is out here getting pissy about a TV character like a mark. To Dustin, this is a respected co-worker, not some wrestler on TV.

The reason he gave for his dislike was so petty too, it really made him look like a dork mark

Still remember the day when goldust was first introduced in wwe. It was a beautiful intro. But the team with booker was on another level. Still remember some clippings and it automatically puts a smile on my face. 😂😂

Goldust is one my favorite wrestlers of all time. Whenever I look up videos on KZitem it is ALWAY Goldust videos. Booker T and him together was the most out of nowhere Tag Team ever and I will never forget all those amazing years of those 2.

Man, Dustin is such a great wrestler and actor. Goldust was one of the most unique character, while hitting on the edge of the alphabet crowd, it didn't go overboard. Dustin played it so well especially for such a manly dude himself. Great job!
