One of the greatest albums ever recorded RIP Dusty, miss you

Anybody familiar with Mexican music knows that the late Rocio Durcal is known as the "most Mexican of the Spaniards." She was from Spain yet conquered traditional Mexican Ranchera music in a way that few Mexicans could. Well, I have to say Dusty deserves a similar title, the "most American of the Brits" for her remarkable ability to interpret purely American themes in a way that rivals that of actual American artists. Mimicry or not, you can't help but sit back and marvel at her genius!

This composition is out of this world, so every cover that has been made (Brook Benton, Clarence Carter, Dusty Springfield, Nancy Wilson, Bettye Swann, Shelby Lynne) is simply magnificent.

Does anyone else realize that Dusty sang that song like a white southern girl in the style of Bobby Gentry and Reba, and many people know that Bobby Gentry also wrote "Fancy" for Reba, and this song sounds like another song in that genre, and considering how successful comercially that "ode to Billie Joe" and fancy were Dusty would have made one hell of a great country singer, in addition to her many mainstream hits. She truly was one of a kind and the world is much lesser without her!

Way back when I was playing records in high school a track teammate who happened to be black was sure sure she was black. Then he saw the cover and said Oh, she's a Country Gal, of course. Nope, she's from England

You're both wrong. Tony Joe White's version is better :p His ending of the song is heartbreaking (and of course, he wrote the song)

It is a brilliant performance but ultimately disappointing. Why did they cut the last verse?? It's the whole point of the song! The narrator bumps into Willie years later in town and invites him over... but Willie just stares at the ground saying, That was another place and another time. Heart Wrenching how the city life had split the two old buddies coz of their race.

Exactly! it is a protest song, very subtle. I guess it was commercially easier to just cut out that part.

They changed the last 3 lines from Tony's original.. This is a protest song but without the last 3 lines the protest is lost. Sad.

Who recorded this first? Was it Clarence Carter, Dusty or Joe? Can't find details on google. Who wrote it?

You prefer Dusty's version, and I prefer Bettye Swann's 'rendition, it is really that simple.

Gerald Landers, Bobby Gentry wrote absolutely NOTHING for "Reba". She wrote Fancy for herself and recorded it. Reba did not even enter the music world until several years after "Fancy" was written and her cover of the song pales in comparison to Bobby Gentry's version.

If you like this you'll love the version by Bettye Swann. Dusty does a nice version but a step down from Swann

Almost totally a cover of the version of the one by Bettye Swann, close but no cigar. I have an LP of Dusty Springfield in Memphis and this number isn't on it.

I disagree. This arrangement is much better, and is actually much more soulful.
