Such a shame that people feel a need to praise their favorite singer by bad mouthing another. The 3 notable versions of this classic are Dionne's, Cilla's and Dusty's. Dionne had a hit in US, Cilla in UK and Dusy recorded it for her first Album(solo). All have their supporter's, but of course Lovely. Legendary Dusty's is mine. But I have no desire or need to denigrate the other versions.

No need to get self-righteous. I don't like Cilla's voice, I'm sorry. I have a right not to like her version and to express that. I genuinely dislike it. It's the quality of the sound of her voice.......there are thousands of female singers that have great talents as singers but Dusty Springfield stand out as the best "quality female voice " in Pop History, adding her perfect intonation, vibrato control, and perhaps one of the few female singers, who could deliver bass-notes and high-notes without losing Balance......skilled singer she was, even today with such variety and abundance of lady singers....her voice will stand the test of time, among the millions.

I love them both although I am a singer and Dusty seems to have better voice control. Cilla wavers at times and has difficulty hitting the low notes not having filled her diaphragm up fully. It`s just as hard to make the low notes nice in sound not losing them as it is to hit high notes as clear as a bell.

Linda Kostin I am a singer in a band too! It looks easy doesn't it? - until you have a go yourself! Singing live is really tough but Cilla pulls it off brilliantly in her live version on YT. This is good as is Dionne Warwick's. But Cilla despite the technical aspects of her singing did 'own' the song - that is the version that I know from my childhood, the one that makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand on end. Reason? Cilla has a real contrast between the soft fragile lines and the hard, 'edgy' strident lines when she takes off with a real crescendo. This version and Dionne's are great but a bit samey throughout. Cilla injected 'light and shade' into her version, real passion. And yes, she was no opera singer but she could belt 'em out and pretty much in tune too. In my humble opinion.
@lindakostin514

sugarpenny10 I heard it by her first as well! You talk about giving away our age eh?! LOL Do you know that Angie McCartney put a message up / link on Facebook last month to let peole know that a series is going to be about Cilla Black? I pray I'll be able to get it! If you type Cilla Black in your search the latest info about her her will show. WE were so fortunate to have been young teens when the British Invasion hit us and then from there until the early 70's so many different song groups in so many different styles of music! This is so wonderful that you sing! It's such a part of a person when a God given gift. If anyone asked me what era I love the most ; it would be when the BRITS invaded the charts! Of course because my fondest memories are of the Beatles and recalling how kids only 2 / 3 would be sitting on their swings singing SHE LOVES YOU YEAH YEAH YEAH at the top of their lungs! LOL Those were the days! Wow; ... I'm REALLY OLD NOW!

Linda Kostin Well...that would be telling! I am - but you have tracked down a clip of me singing on YT! This was a 'one-off' singing with a band that I only vaguely knew at the time, it was an 'open mike night'. And that was the first time I had sung that song with a live backing band (had done it once at karaoke a few years back - that is much easier as the backing track never varies and the words are up on the screen!). There are all my excuses! Anyway - wasn't too bad. As you will know, singing live is particularly challenging. Which is why you have to hand it to Cilla who at 20 was holding an audience captivated and handling the pressure well.

I discovered this song with Dusty when I was dealing with the worst heartbreak so far (and hopefully the last one too) I remember connecting so hard to the lyrics I just started crying, and repeated it over and over again... Today my heart is all healed, but I can't help but reviving the pain whenever I hear this beautiful song, and I can't help but listening to this cause well, it's Burt Bacharach by Dusty Springfield, it doesn't get better than that!
