Her voice is hauntingly beautiful. I love how she sings it in a lower key and does not hurry through. Many people sing this well, and each a little differently. Her rendition is my favorite, of my favorite Irish song.

It was the same with her singing. There's a recording of an interview with her on BBC's Women's Hour where she winces at the thought of listening to her own singing. She never thought she'd done the songs the way she was trying to, had never done them justice, had never made her voice sound the way she wanted it to. For goodness' sake.

In my opinion, Dusty is the only one I've found on here who actually sings this difficult melody, and sings it beautifully, faultlessly, the others find the tune impossible and so whisper it or simply shout it out as if drunk..........Dusty was truly a great singer . Sadly missed R.I.P.

I admire anyone who attempts this song. . It is so easy to get wrong. I do not dislike any of the versions that Dusty, Kate and Sinead have done. Sinead has an advantage in that she understands the words originating in the Irish language. Dusty became Mary O´Brien again for five minutes. Nice job.

An English Rose with an Irish lilt and a great barrier breaking sound from around the world she sure was heaven blessed and what a party she'll be having with King and prince of rock... Had she been of this era she would be at the top but with what sounds because as a pioneer she'd be ground breakingly interesting all over again and she is for all those yet to grow up and discover the Mamma of rock roll house new wave rave and soul and dub dub song to ballads and sweet sweet Irish folk...

@Cythereaswetworld Yes...but her birth name was Mary Catherine Isobel Bernadette O'Brien. That tells you everything you need to know about why she would sing this...and everything the record companies were making her hide at the time(it was VERY uncool to be an Irish person in the UK at this point...even though most of the Beatles actually were in terms of ancestry).

My love of her music goes way back when i was a child in the '60s. My dad playing her LPs on a stereo which was truly analog "tube" amplification, that reflected a special "warm sound," especially when her voice and music came through the speakers. The (string) arrangements and compositions of her music is stunning, to say the least. @jayci68: Hmmm yes! Hear the lovely name and comment you made, regarding Kate Bush. She's my fav of her era. Tough call, regarding who's is better. ;-)

Having only ever previously heard this sung about a woman, I find it so sad that in those days Dusty had to swop it around, doing justice to neither the original song or to herself as a lesbian, unable to come out publicly. Nevertheless, being Mary O'Brien/Dusty, she at least managed to perform a song that reflected some other part of who she was, beyond the truly talented star of that era and the confines of her times. You did great, girl, & here's thanking you for being a part of the memories and cultural backdrop I had as a girl child of the 60's/70's.. 💖✨😘💕✌️🤗

Well, this was back in 1966 or 1967. I'm sure that there were people knowledgeable of Celtic music then too, but so-called "world music" was perhaps not so popular with the masses as it has become in, say, the last twenty years or so. I think that her comment was directed at the larger mass of viewers who probably didn't know many true Celtic tunes. Actually, I like "The Peeler and the Goat"... not the same song of course.
