One of the most perfectly portrayed performances, I think, in the history of American cinema. Seriously. There’s never a moment where you thinks he’s acting; there’s never a moment when he oversells. It’s incredible. And Thornton deserved all the credit in the world for this script. I don’t think there’s a bad performance in the movie.

I always wondered right at the end why he never challenged Karl, but just sat there. Was it 1. Fear? 2. Too drunk? 3. Doesn't think Karl's going to actually do anything? 4. Doesn't care about dying?

Taco Bell I've always wondered that, too. I lean toward 4. Foreshadowing. He was saying earlier in the film that he was hurting. Linda said he'd had a hard life that had run him crazy. So, maybe Karl did what he couldn't bring himself to?

Not sure how to respond, all I can say in Dwight's case is he took theatre while in school and has stated he loves acting almost as much he loves singing. On your other point, I think the reason more actors don't 'become a concert pianist' is because (what I believe) it takes a lot more than just knowing how to play the piano really well. :)
