This is absolutely true. I just heard a story about a woman climbing K2 who was hypothermic and hallucinated a woman giving her tea and she gave her one of her boots in return which left her freezing and shoeless. And this might explain some aspects of this mystery, but certainly not all of it. Hypothermia can’t cut someone’s tongue out or make a body radio active. Ug, this incident is just so dang spooky and weird! 🤯

I think something that keeps tragedies like this ripe for wild speculation is the idea that "people don't just die." Like, look at the people who die climbing mountains with professional guides on well-traveled routes; accidents happen and life is uncomfortably fragile. Heck, people die from hypothermia in the middle of cities. I do like this format of skipping right to the theories around a more heavily-covered topic and not spending a lot of time on the ufo/Bigfoot/conspiracy stuff.

Agreed! I was really struck by the group of Chinese marathon runners who died during a race when a sudden hailstorm swept through. It all happened so quickly, in the middle of the day during an organized race. People are found in very strange conditions after dying from hypothermia too- delusions and hallucinations are not uncommon which can lead people to act irrationally. People also start to feel hot and sometimes subsequently take off their clothing.

Typically mountaineers die in the 'death zone' at elevations above 8000 meters, as there is not enough oxygen in the atmosphere at that point to support human life. Dyatlov pass is only ~800 meters above sea level, way too low to be dangerous in the way that other mountains are. So yes, mountaineers die often in the death zone, especially on mountains and peaks that are less popular. For example, K2 is technically not as tall as Everest but is considered way more dangerous. For a group of highly experienced hikers, I find their deaths highly suspect. 5 of them died from hypothermia allegedly, while the other four had severe trauma and wounds, missing eyes and tongues, misshapen necks, and crushed rib cages. In my opinion this was some sort of internal conflict that caused in-fighting with the group.

I believe the most likely is a slightly different version of #1, where a snow cornice built up and eventually fell on the tent. The group thus thought there was an avalanche (even though there was none) and proceeded to react as if there was an avalanche -> running to the forest, climbing the trees (therefore getting scratches and potentially falling from the tree). At some point, as you mentioned, the group must have split up, the part of the group with the most severe injuries was the one who tried to dig a shelter in the snow. They accidentally did this on a frozen over creek and fell head first on the stones of the small creek. You can see the creek and a tree with broken branches at 3:48

I do a lot of backcountry hiking, I've spent weeks in the Amazon and I've been to a lot of different terrain. Not mountaineering per se but certainly I've climbed a few hills and slept under peaks at night. For people who've never done this type of activity, I understand why it's easy to think "people don't just die". In my experience - people definitely die very fast in the wild. I've had a few close calls in "easy" wilderness; all of them associated with the three devils - cold, precipitation and wind. People in cities (understably - if you've never experienced it how would you know) have no idea how brutal the combination of those three factors get. If you find yourself in a high wind, rainy and relatively cool area then you will find yourself in danger. Spending nights in the rain, cold and wind will kill you quickly - much less actual snow and legitimate cold.

Hypothermia initiating the incident doesn't even pass the first hurdle. There's no doubt many of them got hypothermia from exposure to -30 Celsius for several hours, but the idea that hypothermia started the incident is clearly impossible. The first hurdle is that something scared all of them so badly, so instantaneously, that they cut/ destroyed their only protection against the elements. Their decision making later on was directed & purposeful. They headed to the treeline for protection against the wind. They started a fire. When team members died, the survivors took items of clothing. The last 4 took measures to create a den/shelter with a large quantity of branches collected from tree tops to protect their feet. The idea that 9 people all wake up with hypothermic delirium at the exact same moment is laughable. The severe injuries of the 4 in the ravine is nit a mystery. Their shelter collapsed on them and several tonnes of snow was on top of them for several months. The missing eyes and tongues is basic animal depredation. The radioactive clothes can also be explained through the work environment of a number of the hikers. The mystery is what caused all of them, simultaneously, to think that destroying their tent and walking calmly out into -30 degrees was the preferable option.

They didnt drag any injured to the forest, as all foot prints found were spread out as if in a panicked state near the tent, then becoming orderly, and in a straight line towards the forest. This is believed to mean all could walk on their own. Why they didnt go back to the tent(before descending to the forest)to get warm clothes is the biggest issue with all theories. It doesnt seem to make sense as evidence seen when the tent was found, showed very little snow on the tent, and no reason as to why they couldn’t just move the snow that was there to get warm clothes. The fact that some attempted to go back after getting to the forest, shows that likely they knew they could get their items from the tent. So why didn’t they do it before? My theory is that there wasn’t an Avalanche where they were, but one nearby they thought was coming so they panicked out of their tent. Still doesn’t explain not grabbing Items before the descent. Only a feud seems to explain that, as if everyone was so pissed off, that they didn’t bother to realize their situation. Unlikely as they were all very experienced it should, have been a reflex to get warm clothes. It always comes down to why they didn’t get warm items, or any items it seems from the tent before trekking down to the forest. Every theory breaks down there. Great Video FYI. I enjoyed quite a few before checking this one out. I have spent quite a bit of time researching this incodent myself.

Very concise, but has info not on other videos about this. The visuals are really good. Also, the note at the beginning about the appeal of mountaineering during the old Soviet times was a very interesting point. About those rockets, they might have been set out in places you would not expect them. Certainly here in the US, that was done. During the Cold War, the US had smallish rockets scattered in nonmilitary sites. My family stopped for a picnic lunch on the Eastern Shore of Maryland, and through the trees we could see a missile at the edge of a cornfield. Wierd, but true. So, it seems possible that the hikers could have witnessed a missile firing, either by accident or on purpose.

The behaviour of the hikers became irrational. think about it: 1) they build a small deposit of provisions and they leave behind a pair of skis (there were no spare skis) that means that one of them walked one Km from the deposit to the tent. why? and the next morning that person had to walk back to the deposit to retrieve his skis? it makes no sense. 2) a ski stick was found cut in the tent. why? why would they do that. 3) suddenly they start cutting the canvas of the tent with knives. that canvas is NOT easy to cut, and they needed several attempts to finnaly cut it. there were many cuts along the tent, as if all of them started to cut their way out, ignoring the two exits on each side of the tent. why??? this makes no sense at all 4) they leave the tent, and they walk out without boots into the snow. without gloves, without shoes, without coats..... why? 5) they gather in a group and they walk downhill with 9 sets of footprints walking as if they were in a trance. why? 6) Only 2 of them had boots, the other 7 were barefoot or wearing socks (one had only one boot ). isn't that irrational? 7) NONE were wearing gloves. One of them had a pair of gloves in a pocket of his coat, but he did not use them. WHY ????? Everything started to go wrong in the STORAGE HOUSE. Suddenly they leave behind a pair of skis (remember they had no extra skis), and they make a wrong turn towards the Kholat Syakhl, 1500 meters away, instead of going to the mountain pass, which is the logical route. They took that wrong turn, eight of them in skis, and one of them walking. How is that possible? Why they didn't say: hey what are you doing? go pick your skis. Whatever happened, started in the Storage House, after that, it looks like they were in some kind of a trance, making strange uncomprehensible decisions My opinion is that they were under the influence of a hallucinating drug.They were university students, and had contact with other chemistry students. Maybe they took LSD and Meth. That is the only thing that can explain their irrational behavior. The official soviet autopsies reveal no drugs in the bodies. But I can imagine the soviet government censoring that fact. It was 1957. They could not reveal that 9 young soviet students were dead because of drugs. Drug use among young people was a characteristic of capitalist countries.

None of the "theories" mentioned explain what happened. I worked this out over a year ago in long form and I'll just say that if you focus on all the evidence, they climbed the large cedar tree to obtain combustible firewood and they all fell out of the tree, causing the injuries. Skin and blood were found in the bark and broken branches 15-20 feet up the tree. The rest is too long to type, but there was a blizzard that night that collapsed the tent and they cut their way out and ran for the forest. You don't need an avalanche or bigfoot to explain a sub-arctic blizzard killing a bunch of totally unprepared hikers. If the temps were 25 to 50 degrees below zero farenheight, it's a miracle they survived as long as they did. They also had no firewood for the stove with them that night, as they were caught lost and off-guard when the storm struck. The tent collapsed because it was a flimsy, hand-sewn job with only ski poles to hold it up. I could go on....

A new approach - from me, at least: there was more than one strange events that took place. If we believe Sherlock Holmes - and we should! - if all the other possibilities are ruled out as impossible, no matter how improbable it is, the truth must be the one possibility that can't be ruled out. So, in this case, my take is, there were not only one but two or more very rare things that caused the group to die.

I still find it funny that the avalanche theory which is so popular completely ignores basically all the evidence that exists... Personally the idea of a conflict, likely stemming from either the tent being damaged or the person/people creating the situation which necessitated the group cutting themselves free of the tent, makes the most sense for a lot of the strangeness. However the weirdest part will always be the fact that some of them didn't even stop to put on shoes let alone warm clothes and that even afterwards they didn't try to return to the tent for supplies until it was too late.
@davidmullen6011

I agree with all of that. The fact is that whether you favour the Avalanche or some internal fight that erupted that night (as I do too) then you do have to admit that even these two plausible theories have a lot of snags attached to them. People wearing no socks or boots flee the camp to run a good distance down to the treeline below, through snow, horrific subzero temperatures that will be fatal in less than an hour, in darkness, and not one turned back to grab vital protection or kit...? There are reports of a flashlight left halfway down the slope, two people had footwear and good clothes on, it is not certain their stove was set up and so we are not sure they ate or drank that evening, and yet in these harsh conditions, in this incredibly remote and isolated place, in the late night, is it plausible that a disagreement so violent erupted that someone not only destroyed the tent to escape, but these people couldn't wait to get their clothes and gear before descending to the treeline? It's a real puzzle.

perhaps they had heard the sound of an avalanche nearby, scared some of them and rushed out without thinking straight, the rest were caught up in their comrade' sudden behavior then sprang into panic attack followed those who ran first. They're in peaceful napping, so it's like a jumpscare, when you jump out instinctively. It's just like when some people were in deep chit chat, then 1 of them suddenly rushed out the others would caught in that then follow to run.

Of course I think they died of something very explainable, but I disagree with one thing. There were many people in the group so for the rescue team or anyone else to say definitively that the foot tracks belonged to only the group members is an outright lie. There is no way to know that in those conditions.

There was one theory about the stove in their tent malfuctioning and letting in deadly smoke into the tent, also confusing the hikers into thinking there was a fire. They could have tried to escape in a panic and also release the smoke, some injuring themselves as the tent fell apart and the rush to get out and away. It is definitely mysterious - the avalanche or something liek it and potentially something that caused mass delirium (the sound waves, hypothermia or something) are the most plausible in my mind considering the injuries. In a delirious state any outside noise can be construed as something ominous and once panic sets in it is an "every man for himself" situation. Still, I suppose we will never know what happened.

It's cool you're ok with telling the world stuff about Russia. It's also incredibly important to be telling the world good things about Russia, too. 'Cause this is how you create the image of a country inside the minds of those who listen to you. That's why it would be amazing if you could make out a positive story about Russia, too. How about the story of Vladimir Balyberdin's Everest conquerors group? They were the first ones to get to the tallest world's summit along the most difficult route, and no one has yet done the same thing up to this very day. It would be just super cool and amazing if you could consider the possibility of telling the Western people about them🙏🏻😊 Oh, and one more thing... Please, do not succumb to the tricks of propaganda... The Soviet athletes did not use drugs to earn their medals. They're just as clean as any other nation in the world. I mean, some are good, some are bad, but that's a lie when somebody says they would use drugs or forbidden substances more than the Americans or any other nation on the planet.

You didn't mention any of the official autopsies, which record crushed rib cages, and one of the girls had both of her eyes missing! Also, the fact that one of the men in the group (the stranger) had clothes on him that had traces of radiation. Another wild theory that is really popular in Russia currently is that the group were killed by a special CIA team, dispatched to collect the clothes from the stranger in the group (who was an informant for the Americans). The levels of radiation would indicate how far along the Soviets were in their nuclear program. A CIA team was dropped and later extracted from the region, but during the "exchange" something went wrong, and the Americans freaked out and killed the hikers. Anyways, CRAZY theory, but I think it deserves to be mentioned, there is even a book about it, but sadly it is only available in Russian, :(

The bodies that suffered such soft tissue damage as a missing tongue and eyes were found in a stream. Those “injuries” were actually the result of decomposition in water, and possibly some animal activity. The injuries were sustained after death. In fact, the casual mention of the missing tongue and eyes, etc, in the autopsy without explanation suggests that it was not seen as remarkable by the pathologist nor requiring an explanation or further discussion. They were signs of decomposition on long-dead bodies. Not a mystery at all. The crushed ribs were found in bodies that had fallen down a ravine and were buried by a huge weight of snow. Crushing injuries in such circumstances would be expected and, again, not remarkable.

The psychotropic drugs could have been the fly agaric mushroom and the Ural mountains is one of the places where the strongest form of these mushrooms grow. I believe that jars of alcohol containing these mushrooms were used as a pain killing rub. Yuri Yudin left the group due to back pain and maybe the others had similar jars for aches and pains. It's a possibility but we'll never know as there is no toxicology report.

I don’t remember where, but I did see a video around a year ago and it explains what exactly happened. Main thing that started everything was a snow slab started to slide down over the tent and this caused everyone to panic and run. Sadly not everyone made it out and the several ton slab of snow crushed a few people. The aftermath was chaotic as all their gear was under a solid snow slab, and they didn’t have the basics to a cold day; let alone sun zero temperatures. This lead to hypothermia which lead to the other deaths.
@whitedragoness23

Is it the same one in which the information said the snow slab called high intensity injuries because the snow was going at super speed at them? If this is how they died then I can’t imagine anything else that make their time there so horrible. I doubt they could see anything in the dark and it was just confusion, chaos and death.
@bradkempton7905

I'm going to have to disagree about the snowslab/avalanche theories. There was no damage or signs of an avalanche or a snow slab breaking away. Their tent was found with very little snow on it, maybe a few arm fulls at most and there was no damage to the trees at the bottom of the mountain like there would have been with an avalanche. Look up pictures of an area after it's hit by an avalanche. They cause complete and utter destruction. Their tracks were still there as well. They would FOR SURE have been covered up. To be clear, I have no idea what caused everything, but I am as certain as one can be with this case that it wasn't caused by a snow slab sliding or an avalanche.

While the terrain is indeed relatively flat, the actual topography is misleading because of the snow. Also, there are different types of avalanches; most common being Wet Snow, Loose Snow or ‘Fluff’, and Slab avalanches. Of the 3 Slab avalanches are the most deadly because of their ability to hide in plain sight. Fluff Avalanches are what most people think of when they hear avalanche. Personally I like Ask A Mortician as she specializes in death, and Anton Petrov as he publishes all the latest scientific announcements. Personally, these slopes in the pics don’t ‘LOOK’ avalanche-prone, but again..they are just pictures and ‘shots’ of a slope a LONG time ago in which much has changed. A barren, open slope that seemingly has prevalent windy conditions coursing over it, is even less apt to have avalanches IMO (and here we’re talking -50* at the time).

So it's official that the picture of the man or bigfoot lurking behind a tree is real. My question is why didn't that picture alarm the crew. Whoever took the picture should have been worried cause up in the cold mountain. A encounter with a man that's acting suspicious lurking behind a tree isn't normal. Why would they keep pushing forward when they know a strange man or bigfoot is close behind them or the possibility that it left after being seen by the photographer. I've seen this case tons of time on KZitem and they never focus around the man or bigfoot following them. They just talk about the crime scene and each person's death but I believe it was either the stalker or the environmental where they chose to stop and camp. That spot could have been radioactive and to be on a high level of radiation could be painful and drive them insane. Than the stalker arrives punching one in the chest, ripping out a tongue for a meal later. That's my explanation on the case.

Slab avalanche is plausible, explains the burnt feet, putting numb freezing feet to close to the fire......they couldn't all risk going back to wrecked tents in case of further avalanche and -50 freezing cold so three tried n died....seems in the chaos n horror of night avalanche they just cut tents and were bundled down to tree line causing injuries.......the organise footprints could have either been one or two of the group who weren't caught in avalanche, or the first trek up to tents n back, but couldn't see anything left of use in dark...... explains torch found o ground, they couldn't see it at night as they were all disorganised, cold, and scared.......absolute tragedy, so sad.🙏

In my opinion, the avalanche theory did make the most logical sense but I have 2 small questions about it. First, wasn’t radiation found on the bodies? An avalanche would not account for radiation I don’t think. And secondly, had this simply been a terrible avalanche accident, why wouldn’t the authorities just say so? Why all the secrecy about the deaths if it was just a tragic accident? I would have been more likely to believe the theory that they accidentally came across some type of government or military thing that the authorities didn’t want anyone to know about as I believe these types of government and military research or experiments were not unheard of back then and it would explain the secrecy and radiation if there had really been some. But what’s wrong with that theory is I can’t see the government or military choosing an area so close to a known and popular hiking area to work on something in secret. It seems as though some of the more logical theories have things that fit the facts but others that don’t so maybe we will never know the truth about this.
@kcbarbo78

The type of avalanche at issue here would have been a slab avalanche, signs of which wouldn’t have been obvious weeks later when rescuers arrived. Because the area is not prone to traditional avalanches, it’s likely the possibility of a slab avalanche had not been considered. The radioactive clothing could be explained by the fact that a couple of the hikers worked with radioactive material. I don’t think some of the creative intellectual contortions done to explain the radioactive clothing is really necessary. The simplest explanation is usually the most likely.
@Juliett-we7tc
2 жыл бұрын
@@kcbarbo78 well that could explain it. I was under the impression that the bodies themselves gave off mild radiation not the clothes, but you would have a good point there though. But if it was on just the clothes, why would it be on their hiking clothes as I don’t think they worked in the same clothes they would wear on a serious hike? And if the radiation was strong enough to be on their clothes from working with it, would it not have been strong enough to make them Sick over time? I know absolutely nothing about radiation, all I know is they protect us from it when we get x-rays done so I would think that if exposed to even smaller amounts day after day would make you sick if not protected properly and if it’s still on their clothes after days of being away from the radiation source, it must have been a stronger amount of it that they were exposed to. If that makes any sense as again, I know nothing about it, so I’m not sure if I’m even wording my question properly.

I thought they solved this? The climbers made camp on the downslope of hill, their fire heated the snow which caused a sheet of snow above to break loose and slide the camp down the hill a bit. They followed proper procedures and escaped the area(cutting out of their tent because the avalanche partiall covered them). The crushed remains were due to meltwater collapsing the snow they using as a windbreak, possibly post-mortem.

The camp stove was found unassembled in the tent and, of course, the fire with tree branches was made afterwards in an attempt to keep warm and couldn't be the cause.
