I did the same as you did with the yarn in the chestnut dye, and to got some lovely white patches, but I've got this chestnut dye, and never knew it was a such gorgeous purple colour. I need to try it out 😍

I love them! I did something similar last fall and love that skein of yarn. I still haven’t used it, but it’s so pretty. I soaked in a jar and then steamed the yarn. But the kettle dye effect of stuffing the yarn in a jar turned out great.

I think I'll put together some mini skeins and solar dye them by the pool this weekend. It's still in the high 80s to mid 90s, here in Texas.

Loved this experiment. Since this is such a different result than pan dyeing, I/d love to see swatches of these knit up. I bet they're beautiful!

I think that every single skein done with this technique would have an element of uniqueness to it. :D I wish that I could provide swatches in every video, but I don't have the capacity to do it at this point. :(

I wonder if the red and yellow would have moved if you turned the jar upside down about halfway through.
@ChemKnitsTutorials

That might have been too much time, but if I had turned it around a bit right after setting it up that might have helped.

I think the yellow dye on your hand was from dye on the outside of the jar. I would love to try this technique but I'm in England so the temperature is never that hot.

I think so, too. Or around the threads on the lip.

You could put the jars in the oven and get a similar result, and if you get proper canning jars they'll be able to handle the heat no problem. Timing would be a little different I'm sure, but I think there was a video on here somewhere about using the oven as a heat source. Similarly, I've dyed in mason jars in a water bath on the stove top too.

I love to use mason jars in a water bath! There is another video with this coming up in a few weeks. :D I haven't tried htem in the oven yet, though. I've only done the oven twice I think. (And not with mason jars)

Wow, that was really interesting to see. My favorite was the powder that you did last. If you turned the jar upside down, once or twice, on the red and yellow, then you could get orange in the middle, or would it ruin it? Thanks for sharing. I don't know anything about dying yarn.
@ChemKnitsTutorials
5 жыл бұрын
I don't think it would ruin it at all, it could help - or you could blend everything together to a more solid color which could also be cool.

If you soak the fiber in water for 30 minutes with vinegar added, do you still need to add the vinegar into the jars?

Question: When you dye this way, is there a special way to wash after you complete your project so you don't lose your coloring?
@ChemKnitsTutorials
4 жыл бұрын
No - the color should be well set after enough time in the heat and if there was enough acid in the yarn. There are times (like when I add powder) that some might not dissolve and then there could be bleeding in the end, but if you're worried you can always steam set the yarn after the fact.

I want to dye artificial flowers ..they might b Georgette or rayon..I have options of natural dye from marigolds, second is turmeric or artificial food color...which method do I use..
@ChemKnitsTutorials
3 жыл бұрын
The actual fiber content is important because you would use different dyes for silk georgette or rayon. I haven't tried dyeing a lot of rayon. I don't think you'd get a lot of color from tumeric or marigolds. If the fiber is a polyester, it won't work. Rayon should be dyed like.cotton, which is harder to dye. Artificial food coloring won't work on rayon but would on silk. I'm sorry this isn't more helpful. Rayon can be dyed.wkth fiber reactive dyes.

You spilled a bit of yellow liquid on the outside of the jar while pouring. It probably was in the threads on the jar.
