Great video! I like immersion speckling. The tiny speckles are interesting but I like it when a speckle is large enough to give you a whole stitch in the color.

Thank for this video! I love speckles. It would be interesting to do a comparison between speckling on warm yarn versus room temp.

I agree - it would just be a bit harder for me to do the control without having a steam situation that I can spekle directly onto. And the downside of the heat, is that then the dye clumps to your fingers a bit more. But it would set faster.

Love this technique and those sharp specks! Can more than one dye powder be put in the container with the citric acid at the same time? I'm looking for ways to get multi-colored speckles.

that would work

I have a video on this from a few years ago. Because the citric acid crystals are bigger than the dye powder, when it sticks you do end up getting some speckle blending and not as many of the individual colors. HOwever, if the propotions are right you will see some breaking which is fun. (Actually, look for one of my Muk speckling videos, those have all 40 jacquard colors mixed together and the speckles did give a rainbow, but also a lot of neutrals.)

I'm kind of fascinated with the speckling techniques on yarn but I don't really know what they'll look like after they've been knitted or crocheted. That pink and green yarn mop was fantastic!

Sometimes they end up looking similar to the yarn, in this case mostly white with random little flecks of color. It does depending on how heavy the speckles are, though.

I'm pleased to share there are a lot of sock blank videos on the schedule (meaning filmed but maybe not edited yet.) Until then, here is one version of tie dyeing a sock blank: kzitem.info/news/bejne/spd7vaCmn4R-lag

I like more of the sharper speckles though I don't particularly like speckles on white yarns. Though it's always fun to see what you create.

Whenever I'm doing a video all about the speckles I love doing it on white so you can see how much the various colors spread, but I suppose my personal preference is to have speckles on another color ormore variegated, too. :D

Thanks for the video Rebecca! If I wanted to do tiny speckles after dying a yarn as a tonal in a pan, I would remove all the water once the dye has exhausted then do the speckles straight away without needing for the yarn to cool down right?
@ChemKnitsTutorials
Жыл бұрын
Sure! One reason why I let the yarn cool off is that it can be hard to handle the yarn and manipulate it when hot, but if you can do this with tongs than go for it!

Do you think a heat lamp on the counter would give sharper speckles or is it not hot enough? I don't know how hot they get, but the lamps for reptiles seem to get cooking.
@ChemKnitsTutorials

I dont' think it would be hot enough. The heat lamp for our temporary reptile resident helps heat the space to about 80 degrees. It is hot close to the lamp but not that warm around it.

Really enjoyed this video, I love speckles and the citric acid seems to give the effect I'm looking for, thank you. Would heating the yarn in a microwave work to get the dye to strike faster?
@ChemKnitsTutorials
Жыл бұрын
This is a really good question. I don't use acid dyes in my microwave at home because it is wall mounted and hard to clean. Someday I might purchase a dedicated chemknits micrwave to test out.

Hi I was wondering if you have done a video on speckled yarn but on a yarn that you dye the yarn in a tonal or variegated first?
@ChemKnitsTutorials
Жыл бұрын
Oh yes! I have done things like this a few times. Here is one example of speckles on a tonal base: kzitem.info/news/bejne/tZ5ovqKFrZeBdaQ and an example of a variegated and speckled yarn: kzitem.info/news/bejne/0oiksq6kjGWcZqw I tried to pick spme recent examples.

If you turn on the closed caption (CC) and then go to settings, there should be an option to auto-translate to French. You have to turn on the CC first or else it won't show the auto translate option. These aren't perfect (the english captions aren't perfect either - I think it says chemknits as cabinets a lot) but it is better than nothing. I hope this helps!

@ChemKnitsTutorials

Hi - if you put on closed captions (the CC button at the bottom of the screen) then you should be able to select an auto-translate option in Russian. Before clicking on CC it looks like only English is available, but there are other languages. Even the english subtitles aren't perfect, but I hope this helps!
