so it's like a mini test after an activity? what eg Qn did he use?

for example? so it's basically asking a comprehension question to the class.. but won't he quieter/ less confident students just copy their desk mate? even if not, and some guess, they can still 'get the answer right for the wrong reason.' Not quite sure what he's touched on here

There's more to the story. The way you word a question and the way students deliver their response matters. Instead of asking "is 27 a prime number?" you could ask "why isn't 27 a prime number?" and then have students turn in an exit ticket instead of cold-calling or hand raising.
