Great comparison, thank you! The Beyer M201 sounds flatter and more extended than the SM7B, approaching SDC territory but has the benefits of being dynamic and hypercardioid. Also, the M201 is 3db hotter than the SM7B which is enough to not need an additional (and expensive) preamp booster with common audio interfaces like Focusrite, not trivial at all. In reality the M201 slays the SM7B in every aspect including price, it's a better mic. PS. I own both the M201 and M88.

Thought they both sounded great, but the Beyer definitely works well with your voice. Great comparison!

SM7B sounds boxy in comparison. I love the smooth and extended frequency range of the M201 TG

Very useful. I use the SM7B for voice over. It’s generally excellent in my not-ideal recording space, but tends to over-emphasize hard consonants (around 3kHz) in my voice, even on the flat EQ setting. I often need to edit T and K sounds by hand. I’ve been toying with trying out the M201 for some time since the frequency response is almost ruler flat compared to the SM7B, which has a couple of resonance bumps around the high mids.

This was a super surprising comparison… thanks so much for doing this. I’m going to test these both against each other now for myself and see what I learn! Thanks again!

Did you test it? Which one sounds clearer in the low mids and more condenser-like?

Very insightful review! Only one little constructive feedback: Dont crank the gain of the pre all the way up. I know these mics have really low sensitivity but preamps tend to impart quite of a character when pushed to far, specially at max gain! It's better to push the level in post production (also helps to compare both mic's noise floors).

I understand why you didn't want to test the proximity effect, but still, for some of us, it would have been useful.... Have you ever tried the Shure A 81 WS windscreen on the M201 TG?

Which microphone, in your opinion, captures the low mids clearer and less muddy, if you record them in your DAW side by side? I mean, the C3-C4 octave? For singing.

Hmm, probably the SM7b.

@@AjushiPhotography Okay. I have an SM7B and high quality interface, just looking around, in case there is cleaner, less boomy and more responsive dynamic microphone for the transients at a lower price (probably, Sm7B was overmarketed and I spent too much money, I suspect, there secretly exists a much cheaper microphone, while clearer and more high quality sounding) . Basically I want to find a high quality condenser-like (in sound) dynamic microphone that sounds clearer and not boxy like Sm7B with flat setting overall. The drawbacks of Sm7B for me: 1) adds a lot of unnecessary low mids that just hum but not reproduce the transients clearly (partially due to untreated room, but I think microphone’s characteristics also contribute to that). No, that’s not the proximity effect. 2) cuts out the initial syllables of words by 10 db; 3) lacks the clarity of a condenser in the higher frequencies; 4) the transient response is really not delicate, it sounds better when the singing is louder, but when you soften the voice, the transients disappear under the layer of mud.

What the internet lacks is the singing examples with Beyerdynamic 201 TG vs other microphones. That will be interesting to hear.

@@saxofonistacr I now use Sm7B with presence boost, this is the most “out-of-the-box” sound that one can get out of this microphone, because it releases the transients in singing, makes it move more faster. Generally my opinion as of now is that dynamic microphones sound quite similar, and it’s the material what matters, so as for now I decided not to buy a cat in the sack and use what I got. That endless gear rush doesn’t really bring anything valuable, people just buy ten microphones, then I ask a random guy on the internet: “Have you recorded any song with the microphones that you have?” He says “no”.
