These two people are the best... Over the last months I've learned a number of guidelines from them and worked them into my diet and my diet tracking settings (Chronometer). They seem to hit just the right level of detail in discussions, no glittering generalities but no getting lost in the chemistry weeds, either. And it has paid off, apparently, because at my last follow up visit with my nephrologist he reviewed the blood work and (among other improvements) I went from stage 3 failure to the upper reaches of stage 2, and my next appointment is not for a year.

Excellent content and clear delivery for complicated issues. I am 72, congenitally left with one functioning kidney, electrical heart disease, and now Crohn’s Disease and SIBO methane. Complicated! Definitely moving back to WFPB diet before/instead of embarking on immune suppressing drugs and anti-bionics. BP meds are working well enough and WGPB last 30 days BP already even better, critical for my hard-working solo kidney. Presentations like yours reinforce decision making away from the remaining processed “healthy” foods in my diet and give me confidence to engage my GI “Team” and my nephrologist. Many thanks!❤

It is important to know whether you consider sodium intake or salt (=sodium chloride ) intake and not mess up these two numbers. 100mg sodium are equivalent to 250 mg of salt. Sometimes managing the different aspects of CKD reminds me of a Rubik Cube: You just want to change one position and you mess up the whole cube.....;-)

Thanks for sharing all the knowledge that can save lives A member in my family was recently diagnosed with kidney disease..he is in 4th stage with kidney function around 15 %.What type of diet would you recommend for such patient?

Hello! We highly recommend he work 1:1 with a renal dietitian if he can so that they can review his health history, labs and intake and customize a plan specifically for him and his needs. In general, a low sodium, plant based or plant predominant diet that avoids/limits highly processed foods is very beneficial for people with CKD.

Dr Hashmi, are ALL carbs bad? or are you just referring to ultra processed carbs like pizza, cereal, donuts, pancakes, sphagetti, etc, and not whole grains, potatoes, sweet potatoes, etc (whole foods plants)?

That is correct. We love our complex carbs.

Soy also comes in pasta made with dried sovbeans and water. But ii prefer other legumes made into pasta as soy is usually more protein than I want. My protein level from Dr is max of 760 grams a day.

I started on this whole Foods plant based diet three months ago and since I’ve been on it from previously being on an Atkins diet my urine samples have gotten a lot worse even though my A1 C went down one point. This is extremely confusing and alarming to me and I don’t know how to fix the problem. Now the doctor wants me to go see a bunch of specialist

I use canned beans a lot at home but rinse them out in water to get rid of some of the sodium. Is that something you would recommend rinsing out canned beans and legumes?
@PlantBasedKidneyHealth
Жыл бұрын
Yes! Definitely recommend draining/rinsing canned beans/veggies to remove ~50% of the sodium. You can usually find no salt added or low sodium canned beans/veggies (just check label to make sure potassium chloride hasn't been added).

My BP runs from a low of 96 to 119, mostly over 47 to 60. I am on 2 BP medsicines, should my meds be adjusted ? I've been on a plant based, very low sodium, no meat eating style and have lost 40 lbs since April 20

You definitely want to address low and high BP levels with doctor so they can adjust meds accordingly! Especially when making diet/lifestyle changes.

Hi, docs. I got a question, what happens if with sodium restriction, your pressure is very low. What do you have to do? Increase sodium intake or ajust pharmacology treatment?
@PlantBasedKidneyHealth
2 жыл бұрын
Hi Denisse. You definitely want your physician to evaluate and adjust blood pressure medications if it is running low. It is best to keep a log of your blood pressure so that they can see your blood pressure range over the course of the day and weeks. A renal dietitian can also take a look at your diet and evaluate if you are being too restrictive with diet (though this is not common unless someone is cooking all their meals at home and not using any salt/seasoning or packaged foods).

@@PlantBasedKidneyHealth Hi Dr! If sodium doesn’t push up your BP and it’s in a good range is sodium still a danger in and of itself? Even if it doesn’t affect BP can it still be bad for kidneys/body in any way?
