Been using my boox nova 2 for a few years and I LOVE it. The screen is so big I wish I had it through university, side loading teacher assigned PDFs to read on my little paperwhite was a pain, but still easier than printing and hauling them to read during my breaks at work, to my partner's, home, and back to school. This is the best of big screen and ereader- and I've read over MANY offer documents my realtors drafter up, and I'm able to take notes and ask questions before signing away(and not having to waste ink, paper, and space or wear out my eyes reading on my PC or phone). The tradeoff for being able to read PDFs comfortably is its BIG. That makes reading regular books a bit of a pain, but I use PDFs for so many things that it's a small trade off. If you know a college student and want to send them off with an eReader, go with a Boox branded one with a HUGE display. Trust me, their book bags will thank them!

I use Onyx Boox Poke 3 as eReader with e-ink screen. I use it as eReader and it is ok. Pros are playstore apps: kindle, Headwey and other android apss that I used on phone are awailable on my eReader too. Another great thing is a plenty of memory capacity (32GB and awailable 22GB wich is for eBooks and some music for reading endless memory). "Downside" is battery life (3 days to week - kindle has weeks of batterylife) and the screen itself has a little less contrast than kindle devices, but it is not bad at all.

Onyx Boox e-readers were based on Android. I had a cheap one (C65 Classic) and it barely allowed you to make use of the system. There was no touchscreen. It didn’t even let you access the filesystem. I figured out a way to sideload apps on it by using the included cloud service, but they have shut it down, so you would no longer be able to use it this way. The more expensive models included a touchscreen and better specs, the one I had was like a stripped down version that only had Android because that’s what all others had. I don’t have it anymore though. It fell and the screen broke, and I got it replaced on the shop’s insurance with a different cheap reader that is worse in some aspects and the UX feels less polished. But at least it works, and it allowed me to experience the feel of two different devices. I see that Onyx makes devices with a pen now as well, so it’s not only the big makers.

I had a very similar device from ONYX. Manga actually didn't look that good. You either have some annoying ghosting or you need to refresh after every page flip which only takes like a second but subjectively really slows down the reading process. I have a Tolino EReader, and while it doesn't look like android at first after a bit of digging around I found that it definitely runs Android and I even got into the bootloader which looks like the one on any other android phone. So it's not the eInk + Android that makes it weird it's the fact that they used a Phone/Tablet distribution of Android.

You are talking about e-ink as if it is only meant to be used on e-readers. I mean compared to LCD and OLED displays, you get the advantage of being able to read outside without wasting an incredible amount of battery, it only consumes energy when it is refreshing and it isn't as harmful to your eyes as LCD or OLED displays (because it reflects light, instead of exposing you to direct blue light). Besides that, you are supporting this amazing technology in becoming faster, more contrasty, and colored. There are already Dasung e-ink monitors that are absurdly fast compared to this one.
@lovely7840

This depends totally on which ereader you use. Boox ereaders can install kindle, and many other apps. And they react very quickly. Take note that this is NOT a tablet, it's an ebook reader, and the e-ink technology is slow in refreshin, so it's NOT MEANT to be used as a tablet, and you can't expect it to do so. However, the boox tablets can actually even play videos on the higher settings, with slight ghosting, so they're actually quite advanced.

Already better than almost all Android powered e-ink tablets LOL.

You go to a table, lay the book flat and crack it open to reveal the "paper". Cool thing they taught us in school!

Thank you so much for this review!!! I was just about to buy it and then i came across this short. To be honest I’ll stick to the classic pen and paper and for e-reading I’ll probably go with a kindle:)))

I have a boox e-ink tablet, and is compatible with kindle. I really like it, and there is a model with color e-ink.

first of all…Huawei isn’t full Android, yes. but that doesn’t have downsides. Just sideload an APK of the app you want. (also Kindles don’t have Play Store either).

Just wait until somebody makes a custom kernel to overclock the refresh rate like on literally all the other e-ink Android devices. And if you don't like the Huawei's app store, just install Google's Play Store. Just because it came like that out of the box, it doesn't mean it's supposed to stay like that. If you buy a new laptop with Linux-pre installed on it, you'll most likely install Windows over it. Or if you are a Linux enthusiast, you'd most likely get rid of Windows on any device you purchased. I really don't understand why people put mobile devices on a pedestal. You're still just buying the hardware. The OS can be any Android distro, especially now with Google's unified development format with their new GSIs (Generic System Images). Even more, Android will soon merge with the mainline Linux kernel, as announced by Google. Like, you really don't need to keep your stuff stock. You're paying for hardware, not software. Android is free and open source.

The Android experience on Onyx Boox devices is better. Still weird in spots but at least they thought through things, even if I don't agree with every choice they made. Still expensive for eInk because it's not subsidized by e-book purchases like the Kindles out there, but it's not insane if you want eInk for health or battery reasons.

I love reading on a kindle, but e-link screens are so far to have the smooth experience required to offer a good tablet.

Wish this was just a regular e ink tablet without harmonyOS and all that

I think they should've made a two screen version. IPS on the front and E-INK on the back.

I think it makes sense for a wrist watch or e-reading, but idk if we’re gonna get responsive and colourful e-ink screens any time soon
