In 1982, the Atari video game adaptation of E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial hit stores for Christmas. It was a commercial failure, and is considered one of the worst games ever made. In 1983, Atari buried around 700,000 game cartridges in a hole in the New Mexican desert, including copies of E.T. The trove became an urban legend and was not unearthed until 2014 as part of the documentary, Atari: Game Over.

Lyrics
In the summer heat, Warshaw toiled away.
Five weeks to code, no time to play.
A second station at home, no time to roam.
For E.T.'s flight, he crafted a dome.
Ambition was high, but time was tight,
A hero's quest in the dead of night.
He worked non-stop, gave it all he got.
For a game to cherish, or so he thought.
The code was clean, but the concept, a trap.
Players lost in a digital map.
Too many pits, too much despair.
In the rush to market, it was all too bare.
E.T., go home, you're not alone.
The worst video game we've ever known.
We didn't want to fall in holes so tall.
E.T., your game's the jankiest of them all.
Millions made, a grave mistake,
Cartridges in the sand, a financial quake.
New Mexico's claim, to the hall of shame.
A crash, a burn, a hard-earned lesson to learn.
It's an alien flop, Reese's' Pieces eatin' slop.
A lesson in history, when to stop the clock.
The industry's scar, from near and far,
E.T. the game, a fallen star.
From the depths of the desert, a story unfolds
Of a game that was buried, and legends told
A cautionary tale of ambition and haste.
E.T.'s legacy, not just a waste.
It sparked a quest for truth and lore,
A dig for history, an urban score.
The cartridges found, a myth no more.
E.T. is part of gaming folklore
