I agree with you. His playing made us all air drum. His playing is so musical. I honestly believe I wouldn't have been that big of a fan without his influence in the Heartbreakers. Mary Jane's Last Dance is a perfect example of how his unique feel contributed everything to the music. I bet Tom fed off him as much as he did off of Tom.

For years I didn't know or this it was Stan on drums on that. I think to me it feels different than on his earlier stuff. maybe it's partly the different bass player or maybe it's like he was talking about his different playing on Zildjian cymbals vs Paiste. Stan Lynch was always there for me growing up, his cool look and feel, he was always a big influence on me and everyone I knew. He's an absolute legend.

I’m a bassist who started on drums and I get it completely. Doesn’t stop me from plowing through the drums and ignoring them sometimes 😊 but it’s clearly influenced my playing on bass. And now that I’m playing some drums again, vice versa.

Fantastic retrospective from Stan on this one. ❤ You also mentioned "Breakdown", which is another desert island track, in a pile of great performances. It's fun to hear Stan suggesting he overplayed on SDMHA because I hear a master class in feel and musicality. "Hunt and peck" indeed. 😊 Stan describes telegraphing changes and arrangement which I always hear as just great "band" players. Those guys would share so much of a common language at that point. The great Shelly Yakus captured an absolutely perfect recording of those drums. I wasn't aware of the isolated drums version until you played a bit of it. It's wild how perfect the drums sound on their own, because you feel so much movement between the players in the final mix. What a great guest! Stan is an excellent story teller. Now I have to wait for the "Breakdown" episode of Track Talk! 👍😏

A great interview with wonderful insights into the inner workings of the song and the recording process. Lynch is a gentlemen with a lot of war stories to tell. I know the beat he's referring to when he mentioned borrowing from Simon Kirk. Breaking down the drum track the way they do helps reveal how brilliant his playing was.

Stan Lynch is one of the all time great rock drummers in my opinion. I think Tom Petty’s sound and the Heartbreakers vibe was very different after he left, it was just more like a sideman thing for a singer songwriter after Stan was gone. Not that I didn’t like it but it was less like a Rock band with a singer and it became more singer songwriterish….. I saw TP and the Heartbreakers twice both times with Stan still there my favorite shows I ever saw.

Duck Dunn played bass on You Tell Me from Damn the Torpedoes, so Tom and Mike would have already known him before Stop Draggin' My Heart Around was recorded. I heard something about Dunn playing on You Tell Me recently on Tom Petty Radio. I think they happened to be in the same studio and somebody who was working on Damn the Torpedoes said you should drop in and hear these guys. Stan might not have been there because as I recall Duck Dunn laid down the bass track on an existing recording.

According to Tom Petty, the song he wrote for Stevie Nicks was Insider. But Tom liked the song so much (it's on Hard Promises as a duet with Stevie) that he told Stevie he couldn't let her have it, he would give her another one. So he gave her Stop Draggin' My Heart Around, which he had already recorded singing solo with the Heartbreakers. It ended up being the huge hit. I think Tom was right and Insider is the better song.

Duck Dunn also played on You Tell Me, which is on Damn the Torpedoes. One of their most underrated songs with a fantastic groove. I don't think Duck played it with the band. They had the rest of it and then added his bass.
