That is true, the first oil change, airbag reactivation, and instrument cluster replacement were all done at a local BMW dealership. I could have saved $50 to do the oil elsewhere, however the air bags I didn't have much of a choice. Also the instrument cluster could have been sent off for repair if I didn't want to drive the car for a few weeks, so that repair was stuck at BMW too.

My 2001 M sport has been the best car I have ever owned! 6 years!...and at 180,000 miles the bearings in the alternator failed. (understandably) The car refuses to damage itself and stops which is a good thing. $365 alt change and that's the only "break-down". It's at 210,000 miles now and running like a clock. My father used to drive a E38 728i (darkgreen metallic, beige interior) back in the days, what a great car. The navigation system and the onboard telephone felt like spaceship technology in 1994. Wow, and I thought my few years of having my 2001 740il costs were to much. I admit that there's a something about the e38, and it drove flawlessly, but it will costs you. Its interior was plagued with problems, especially the drivers seat and the radio, but I had issues mainly with gunk in my engine. The e38, with the help of the Bimmer forums, helped me avoid many of the repair costs. I was surprised at how it wasn't difficult to work on, especially if you have a garage. Its also a beautiful design, and often I'd find myself looking back at it as I walked away. I wasn't a diyers, but I was able to reolace the alternator with the forums help. I just didn't trust it for out of town trips, so I traded it in for a 2004 Lexus LS400. ps. my oil changes were done by me for less than $80.

Two oil changes alone cost $425, that's way to much. Mine cost $19.95 and cause my buddy's work there they charge me that for full synthetic. $6900 for that car was overpriced even if it was in perfect condition. I've seen a few for $1,000 with 200,000 miles and $2500 in great condition with 120,000 miles. I love the e38 but it's costly so I bought a 97 Town car for $1,100 over a year ago and total repairs $0. My previous car was a 2001 town car paid $1400 for it $0 in repairs over the two years I had it.

Or if I would need the whole door panel as well cause I did notice there is more of a gap on the cars that came with them, I have the same post on the bimmer forum but no body has respond yet or I either posted it in the wrong part of the forum lol but yeah if you have a answer or even anyone reading this on KZitem that knows that would be very helpful thanks
@PRNTestDrive
7 жыл бұрын
You would need to find the complete door panel to install the door-side shades, along with the connecting hooks at the top of the window trim. The shades screw into the door frame itself so they should install no matter what, it's just getting the right door card in order for them to retract into, otherwise your existing door card wouldn't fit back in place. I haven't looked too much into the hooks at the top of the door, but they should be able to screw into place like the shades themselves. Hopefully that helps a bit!

PRN thanks, indeed, it is. I ve been looking for her for a long time. However it is rather old car, so quite often there is something to do like seals, electric devices. I am confused, if is it better to drive older, classical however sometimes demanding car or modern but smaller, a little bit cheaper, with smaller engine. It is said that new cars are bad, problematic, with a great deal of things to repair. But this legend about e38, w140, audi d2, mercedes w124 etc. seems to be a little bit fake. Cuz these are old cars with their "defects" coused by its age. And sometimes these defects are quite expensive to repair. In fact, i am thinking about something more simple, what is not easy to find looking at new cars. And on the other hand something simple is just boring. I am so confused realy... waiting for your statement. Well i am also a freak of it, and everything is driving me crazy. For example: i just replaced upper timing chain gaskets, mechanic didnt change valve cover gasket(it has been changed a year ago), so that, it is leaking a little bit. Or steering pump hoses leak etc... it is standard in e38, but annoying :)

I don't have any experience with LPG conversions, but it seems to be relatively reliable long-term. Inside might be a bit of a problem though if it's ruined, finding replacement seats might be difficult. Price seems alright, but if you have to get a new interior it might not be worth it.

Why did your oil changes cost so much? Is there something specific about the oil change for a 740?
@PRNTestDrive
7 жыл бұрын
First one we did at BMW, since we needed other Dealer-only repairs done such as the cluster replacement and Airbag reactivation. We just had an oil change here in Québec at a Napa, cost $180. We're likely taking the E38 off the road this month and will be doing major work to it, at the same time we'll start doing the oil ourselves now that we have the facilities to do it.

In many European countries, the parts you replaced can be bought way cheaper and replaced cheaper, due to the fact that these cars seem to be more common around here. But damn, for the total money you spent on the E38, I could've bought a facelift E65, which are really nice to drive, although probably much less reliable than E38.
@PRNTestDrive
7 жыл бұрын
The initial cost of an E65 would have been much higher too, especially for one in good condition. The prices are lower but for a similar E66 it would have been around $12,000 here, those were about the prices for something decent when I was looking last year.
@drbachata20

Hi! I was interested in knowing how much it cost you to replace just the cluster at the dealer? Did they repair your original one or did they sell you a new one/refurbished one? Also, have the chain rail guides been done on this car? Beautiful ride by the way!
@PRNTestDrive
7 жыл бұрын
It cost me around $1,000 I believe, the installation was 2 Hours labour and the part itself was around $700 for a brand new cluster from BMW. The timing chain guides are a mystery for this car, I didn't get any service history with it so I'm not sure if they were done or not. From what I can tell they don't seem to be an issue right now.

I've heard some stories that people will write off their E38s due to transmission problems, only to find out a fluid change would fix the problem. I've seen a handful of people who've had success buying a cheap E38 and repairing it on the cheap. New battery should be relatively inexpensive as well, but you'll want to find one that's recommended for the E38, and have it 'Registered' with the car's DME in order for the car to function properly.

They are extremely robust over engineered not to a fault. Oil change in a tuxedo no problems. Owned mine 7years. Cheapest parts, easiest to install. Not kidding. Look up all the shit you need on ebay and KZitem. This is a hell of a winner of a car. While my friends own mere mortal cars that cost $50,000 new... Mine is $230,000 high line. Mine is just ... Better. In all ways. They spend more on services because those cheaper cars fall apart. I akin a hugely expensive car like a house. Solid, good, worth it. Best thing is depreciation, bring it on! I drive mine hard, on dirt roads, I give it hell. It takes it like its nothing. These cars ran 32valve v8s in the 90s! while some major companies still use 1950s pushrods blocks that idiots think are fantastic new cars... No! The engines are old rubbish tricked up with peripherals. An m62 is one of the worlds greatest engines ever made to this point. I shouldn't say these things. How rude and arrogant of me.

Well I put it in example and so you can compare it. My 730D had to undergo a major overhaul and I am still working on it, but the first phase of repairs was this. FEBI Belt (AC) : 182 CZK -> 7,4 $ USD FEBI Belt (Alternator, Water pump, Servo) -> 325 CZK -> 13,2 $ USD New BOSCH Alternator (Generator) -> 5 200 CZK -> 211 $ USD GT2556V Turbo (I have a turbo guy for this so this is ultra cheap) -> 11 250 CZK -> 459 $ USD Some parts here and then (plastics, belt covers, etc.) -> 50 $ USD Thats around 1000 $ USD including work. And I have new alternator and turbo + ton of other things that were missing on my 7 series, like engine covers and some plastics here and then. I do not mention the plastic parts here and then, some axle repairs which shocked me in your video your prices are crazy, 500$ for one axle part ? I just buy the joint and refurbish the old part using hydraulic press. I was able to repair practically every joint on my front driving axle. Plus you can weld yourself a Rod Stabilizer, from a Volkswagen for example, they have the same rigidity and its perfectly O.k. and you don't have to spend fortune on BMW dealership. My friend is doing all the work, he also prepares my other project cars, cause changing the turbo and belts is rather tricky... For this he would charge like : 100$ USD,... But shop would charge me 1000$ USD and they would have done far worse job... (previous experience) So I always give him like a 300% tip.
@PRNTestDrive

Not bad at all! It helps having the ability to do the work yourself, or have a friend help you out. Had I been able to do the exhaust work and suspension myself I'd have saved at least $800. Sounds like you've been putting quite a bit of time into your E38, should last you a while!
@McxCZ
8 жыл бұрын
Thanks ! I hope yours will last a while also, they are splendid machines :) I really think its more of a where you live problem, here is a cheaper workforce I would say so, average salary here is a 670 $ a month, so for example, 8 hours of work on my car would cost me about 65 $ in a shop. And about 200$ in a special BMW dealership. Therefore as in U.S. or Canada I would believe you earn more, you pay more :)

@PRNTestDrive
8 жыл бұрын
Good question, it's something I haven't gone into detail with on my videos. While it was a no-fault accident, my deductible was $500 plus I'm sure they'd find a way to increase my rates if I put the claim through. The shop would also have had to keep my car for up to a week without a loaner/rental. The shop quoted me $2,600 but did not include OEM parts, the bumper, fog lights, and brake duct would have all been aftermarket. I decided to try and tackle the job myself and lucked out by finding a 9/10 condition bumper. I'm still on the hunt for someone parting out a Cosmos Black LCI model that I can buy the bumper off of. Would still end up being cheaper than going through insurance in this case. I've also since removed the comprehensive and collision coverage on my E38, there's no sense paying an extra $100 a month only to have a $500 deductible on car they'd write off.

Im looking to purchase a 2013 328xi or 528xi in the next 3-4 months. I have no clue on how the new BMWs are in terms of ownership costs. Coming from a E39 540i (costly car but had high mileage maybe thats why), then 2009 G37xS, tremendous reliability. Best car ive owned but horrible gas mileage similar to my 540i sadly. Now im guessing the maintenance and repair costs for a 328xi might be less than 528xi? Im in Calgary.
@PRNTestDrive
7 жыл бұрын
I'd say that the cost of ownership between either one should be pretty similar, they'd share the same engine and neither have very different mechanical systems. I feel like the 3 Series is more reliable overall, however I haven't heard many complaints about the 528i xDrives from 2013 and newer, so you shouldn't need to worry too much about one being worse than the other. From what I read about on different BMW forums and communities is the 28 engine is the most reliable, especially when compared with the 335i/535i. A friend of the Channel had their 335i in the shop for two engine rebuilds after issues with the turbos, and the car was driven only for commuting, never pushed hard.
@frazmeup

Unless you really need performance, I'd agree and stick with the 28i engines. They're plenty powerful enough in sedan models and with the xDrive 4 wheel drive you'll be set for the snow in Alberta!

I have a '96 and for what you get for the money these cars are extremely inexpensive compared to buying something new. and most of all NO Car Payments!!

That’s certainly a great point. Unfortunately most people look at these cars from the perspective of their resale list price, example a $5,600 car like mine, rather than a $20,000 car that costs $5,600 up front but will need maintenance and service throughout. If you treat it that way and budget as if you had a newer car you’ll be in pretty good shape.

I am just purchasing this 1996 version for £8,000 with intensions of going cruising around Europe, only 40,000 warranted miles. Relax back in time. kzitem.info/news/bejne/yaWlxYabZoZ_Zno
