Best video I have seen in the subject. Wasted a whole hour on putting in the right side on a left side car. Saved $900 bucks with this repair.

Thanks so much for this video i watched someone elses and they had done it wrong so i broke 2 lock repair kits, luckily they only cost me £5.50 each, i nearly gave up and took it to the dealership which i couldnt really afford until i came across your video and and decided to give it one last go. It took me about a minute to do and works perfect. U da man!!!

The shaft on my e90 has 2 flared out cone sections but the kit is not, will this matter? Do i need to get a different kit?

Good video, and very helpful. The only problem is that it looks like you used the wrong one of the two collars (left hand/right hand) that came with the repair kit. In order to use the one you indicated, the key slot (at least on my lock) would have had to be in the horizontal position instead of the normal, vertical, position. I used the part you didn't use and it fit properly and the lock operates as it should. This was on a MY 2000 left hand drive E46 coupe.

Enzo Baker How did you get it to fit with the right-hand collar? Because I'm having the same issue where the left one isn't fitting properly.

Chris As I recall, either collar will fit. It's just that one will fit when the key slot is vertical (normal position), and the other will fit when the key slot is horizontal.

Enzo Baker my son has 2000 323ci and we are having same issue with using the peice that all the youtube videos show and it dosnt work correct , being in the horizontal position made his car believe it was being stolen and created other problems. so dont assume that yours takes the left hand part

Me too, I cannot get the silly lock assembly out of the door. I took the screw out and pulled it the lock out a bit but it would not release. Is there another clip or something behind the door panel I have to take loose?

Followed your video. Works perfectly but I cannot get the key tumbler back in far enough for the bolt to screw in. Any tricks on this process. Thanks.

when I follow your instructions, the spring doesn't catch when turning one direction... it hops over the post and gets stuck on the same side as the other end... this results in having to destroy the spring to get the assembly taken apart again... any thoughts?

So would this be the same repair process for my situation? which is that last night i put my key in the driver door, turned it, heard something fall inside the door, and when i pulled the key out the barrel came out of the door with it.

What is the name of the part you are touching at 0:19? My key and lock works fine, just can't find a replacement for what that end silver keyhole bit is.

Great video! plan on getting this. I just forced my bmw's foor lock which is frozen. Is this kit likely to fix it? Since I forced the key, it turn to unlock and lock it like if it was warm out but doesn't unlock/lock of course. Thanks!

I did everything exactly as shown, but I'm having a problem. I can turn the key to lock/unlock, but it gets stuck. I can only release it back to neutral when I compress the shaft (compressing the spring). I've done and re-done this many times and it does it every time. Any clues?

does it matter which you use the right or left hand drive part? like what difference does it make??
@TomasBMW

Yes it does matter. The LHD and RHD parts are inverted so you need to put the correct part on or else it just won't go together correctly.

Thank you very much for your help. You turned a major PITA job into a very easy fix. Note:: I didn't take the interior panel off to gain access to the 4 mm Allen Bolt that holds the door lock to the actuator. Go to 6:49 of this Vid to show you the plastic access cover on the door jam to view the cover:: Repairing door handles on a BMW X5 2000 thru 2006 I also used a ball end 4mm long allen tool. When I loosened the bolt, I then held the allen tool in place with tape to the door (leaving the tool in the access hole and taping to the door). This helps by not letting the allen bolt fall down the inside of the door, using long pliers didn't work for me as it couldn't get enough purchase on the bolt. I used a plastic pry tool and my door key to wiggle out the lock. With the allen tool still inserted and taped to the door, I pushed the allen bolt back through (outward) the actuator and taped the threads to stop the allen bolt falling into the door. This allowed me to take the lock to somewhere comfortable and repair the look. I took the allen tool out of the way so it didn't get bumped but what ever works for you. When I repaired the lock, I removed the tape of the exposed threads sticking out out side of the door. I gently pushed the bolt back into the door while holding the allen tool into the head of the allen bolt. When the thread is flush with the actuator, I taped the allen tool to the door again to hold the allen bolt an stop the bolt from falling into the door. Don't forget to lube the lock mechanism, I used a silicon spray, I had never used the key to unlock the car, it was only when I had a flat battery that I realised I couldn't unlock the car as the lock was Fooked. I inserted the key into the lock to assist in wiggling the door lock back into the actuator. I wiggled the lock as flush as I could and tightened the allen bolt to bring it all into place. Hope this helps. Cheers Gaz
