Building in the winter has been a challenge with rain and snow. We finally had a stretch of good weather to get the trusses up in the barn great room. I am relieved that we are moving closer to the roof install and getting the barn dried in.
I really wanted the look an an old school barn. Finding the right beams was a challenge: old school hand hewn beams are very expensive, even to wrap an LVL, and the width of the barn great room is 30' long. We ended up using dried oak beams from Fox Hard Lumber in Leipers Fork, TN . Fox will will also provide the poplar siding and wood flooring. They provided the oak siding and beams in the pole barn too. The Fox family has a managed forest and an on-site sawmill. I like that the beams are from TN oak trees grown, sawn and dried less than 1 hour away.
An "old school" look also meant not using any metal brackets to connect the posts. The guys ended up using steel dowels to connect everything. The trusses came out beautiful. I chose queen trusses because I think they are visually cleaner and more interesting than the standard (and much more common ) king truss. I also think that they are more inline with the structural elements of old barns. Now that the beams are up, the guys will frame the roof, put on the decking and finally we will be able to get the metal roof up... hopefully in a couple weeks.
