We are now entering the very exciting time of integrating all my salvage finds into the structure. For the last 18 months, I have been stockpiling salvage items (mostly found through FB marketplace) to use in the new construction. I grew up in old farmhouses and hoped to live in one. Here, I had the opportunity to buy land from Danny, and so I am designing the new construction to look old.
I bought a porch (the posts, spandrels and brackets) from a late 1800s house in Eagleville. We were able to use the posts on 2 porches: the side porch facing the hill and the baby farmhouse porch. We added 6"x6" oak posts to the bottom to create length. On the east porch, we will eventually add the salvaged spandrels and brackets- but that will be later this summer due to budget constraints.
On the farmhouse porch, I bought cedar shingles for the "fish scales" that go in the gable, the running trim ("picket fence"), spandrel (4") and brackets ("star") from Vintage Woodworks based in Quinlan, TX. This company has an unbelievable selection of all things "old" (but they are new) via their website. My aunt Johanna's house in RI has the star brackets. I always liked those and wanted to use the same theme in my porch. Also, the TN flag has 3 stars, so I think the theme ties in nicely. The guys did a fantastic job working all of the pieces in together.
The front door is a FB find from Mayfield, KY. I purchased it this winter. It looks incredible next to the leaded glass window (from Bowling Green, KY).
On the interior, we are working on the flooring. I chose Brazilian slate tile for the high traffic areas. It looks incredible. Tomorrow it will be grouted. The other floors will be hardwood (oak) and the bathrooms will be tiled with the vintage-looking mini hexagons. This week is calling for lots of rain. I am hoping for dry weather so septic can get started.
I know the painter will prime on Tuesday and my water line will go in tomorrow. Stay tuned!
