Bushing failure on the X3 was causing the thunk when hitting the brakes and minor rotor runout was very exaggerated due to excess looseness. Went to order parts, and of course it's not easy. Make sure you have the right control arms to fit your ball joints and ball joints to fit your control arms! What should have been a simple Front Lower Forward Control Arm swap became a battle with rust when the (good) ball joints had to be replaced to fit the new arms and they were seized into the knuckles.
