For 40 days, an international team from Chile, Rapa Nui, the United States, Netherlands, Spain, and Italy have been studying and documenting biodiversity along an underwater mountain range that extends from the coast of Chile to the Island of Rapa Nui. The #SalasyGomezRidge is a critical corridor for migrating whales, seabirds, and other species, many of which are listed as threatened or endangered. Scientists have found distinct ecosystems at each location they visited along the seafloor - experts believe the unique attributes of each seamount may warrant more comprehensive protection for the whole region. “We leave very happy, with that gratification in our hearts, with an incentive to protect, to go back to the island to promote protection. This will help a lot to promote environmental conservation politics both locally for us as Rapa Nui people and for the whole world.”
