Something I have never seen! Absolutely unreal. While sitting up at the cabin at Pine Point in Clam Lake, WI, we heard tons of splashing, loons screaming and brutal gurgling sounds. I grabbed the camera (no time to switch lens or set it up) and ran down to the dock thinking there were elk in the water.
It took me a while to even see what you guys are barely seeing now (after digital zooming). When I zoomed in digitally in my camera’s photography setting, I could barely make out the Eagle flapping around in the water; the loons close by.
I ran up to the cabin to get my wife, Traci, and we scooted out in the Lund to “help” the Eagle. We quickly found out it didn’t need any help as it swam perfectly back into shore and dried itself out. It was really awesome seeing it take off after the long swim.
After it took off, we went back to the Heron to find blood-tainted water around it. I lifted it up to find the vicious kill wounds in its body and decided not to put this clip in this video. After getting home from the trip, I went back through this video and was able to see that the Eagle actually killed the Heron as it was flapping in the water prior to our arrival. I am not sure if the fight ensued in the sky or if the Eagle had the Heron in its grasps prior to my knowledge, but one thing is for certain, this Eagle killed the Heron… for whatever reason.
We went back the next morning - the Heron was gone. While I didn’t have the time to set the camera up (and only ran one in auto mode) you can make it out. Nature is nature, and no matter how you look at it, everything happens for a reason.
