As an Englishman, I wish we had someone like him on football panels. The man is clearly great value. We have to put up with cheerleaders always telling us how wonderful the Premiership is, without considering why the national team is so bad.

The Australia-Iran qualifier at the MCG in 1997 still grinds my gears. Venables chose to start Steve Horvat - who was without a club at the time and hadn't kicked a football in anger in some time after being released by Hajduk Split - alongside Socceroos Captain Alex Tobin instead of Tobin's long-time club and country partner Milan Ivanovic. As it happened Horvat and Tobin played with zero cohesion at the back and Iran scored two incredibly soft goals accompanied by non-existent marking.

@MasterofSpiders To be fair to his time at Rovers, himself and Giles held an idealogy that he felt was ripped apart by some small minded clubs, with a win at all costs style of football. They wanted Rovers to play beautiful stuff, but felt other teams hindered them. Of course, you're entitled not to just roll over against bigger teams, but it's also not nice to see very short sighted attitudes, that exist not only in League of Ireland football, but many clubs abroad, as well.

Venables good points: He got England to the semi final of the European Championships on home ground, beating Holland and Spain on the way. Won the title with Barcelona and got them to a European Cup final the following season. Won the FA Cup with Spurs against Nottingham Forest that was managed by Clough, one of the greats of the game. Players have spoken positively about their experience playing under him and clearly have respect. His bad points: Is a journeyman and mercenary. Didn’t last more than two years in most of his jobs. Failed to qualify for the 98 World Cup with Australia through one game. Courts controversy off the field with mismanagement of money. Financially crippled Portsmouth. Isn’t committed. Didn’t turn up for his first game at Leeds to do a gig for the BBC Holliday programme etc.
