Don't scrape the tip across the 599B tip cleaner. Simply poke thru the ball a few times. This is because you can splatter yourself with hot solder if you scrape across.

One note: The guide that came with my station says the black pad is for ESD, but makes no mention of using it to change tips.

Keep always some solder on your tip. Never clean the tip and place the iron in the holder. You will ruin the tips, because of oxidation very quick. Clean the tip and immediately put some solder to it, before soldering.

Hello, is this fx951 still going strong? Right now I see it for 280€, while the JBC cd-2bqf for 310€ (on sale). Note: prices not including VAT

Yes, still going strong. Compare the price of thr cartridges. Otherwise go for the JBC.

Thanks for the pics. Im trying to figure out how the temp sensor is tied in. The temp sensor is built into the tips from what I understand. If it ties into the black wire I wonder what it ties into inside the assembly? The tips from what I can find have contacts for the Red, Black and then Ground.

Red to Black is 8.9 ohms which is probably the heating element. The main body (earth) has about 2.8Mohms to Black and Red. It's possible that the heating element and temp sensor is are one and the same. The heating element will change its resistance with temperature. By pumping a constant current through the element you could get a voltage feedback that would reflect the resistance of the element. (just speculating tho)

Thanks. From my research I have seen many "DIY" Solder Iron controllers that use the T12/T15 tips. And the majority of them are 3 wires. Being that the White connects to its own terminal on the tip holder, (I assume it goes up into the holder assembly and connects to something?) then has a wire from the white terminal to the Black, do you have any thoughts off the top of your head as to what the white wire could be?

I think the white wire is a safety. If the inside of the wand gets too hot the unit will shut off.

Would you happen to know what metal the tip holder is made of? Aluminum or iron maybe? Also the base of the stand. Does it have some weight to it so it doesn't move around, etc...?

The tip holder is cast aluminum. It weighs just over a pound. It also has rubber feet. It does a pretty good job of not moving around as long as you're too rough enough it. You could always weigh it down more.

@@eapbg - Thanks, I bought a used set online and could not find these details on Hakkos site.

Very informative, I never saw the JBC so I am looking at that and the 951. Do you have any regrets yet that you should have bought the JBC?

No regrets at all. Great iron. The tips aren't as easy to change as the JBC. If you CONSTANTLY change tips, the added price of the JBC may be worth it. Otherwise the 951 can't be beat.

Thanks for this. Is there any way you could show the wiring connectors in the handset and on the solder side of the Pin Connectors? It literally does NOT exist on the Internet. I have been scouring for days. You would be the only one if you did. Thanks for your time.

If I understood, you want me to buzz out the connections in the wand? I may not be able to get them all, it looks like there are only 4 wires that come out but the connector has 8 pins. Some may be doubled up. Now i'm very curious, why you want to know?

My buddy gave me a Hakko FX-951, but he didn't have an iron for it. I don't have an extra 100.00 to buy an official one, So i am looking to craft my own. I bought the casing and connector and the 8 PIN barrel connector, but there is NOTHING out there that shows how its wired. The manual for the 951 gives some info on handle connector/PIN correlation via testing procedures. That's why I was stumped, 4 wires but 8 pins and I am wondering if they are just blank or if they are jumpered. Manual clearly shows where Red/Black/Green wires connect in the wand and what pins they goto on the connector, but the white stumps me. And some info I found says there is some kind of resistor or component between red/black wires in the handle.

No pins are doubled up. (The pinout is as described) Green goes to the element body (the big metal body). Black goes to the center ring. Red goes to the third ring. White goes to something that disappears in the plastic and then comes out and ties to black (maybe temp sensor) ohms at 9.72k. Then there is a blue that is tied to pin 6 then to an LED and then to the black. The LED anode is to pin 6.

So there is 5 wires? Uhg. Manual doesnt mention a blue wire at all. Any chance of you uploading pics of both ends somewhere?

I could throw some pictures up this weekend. Also i forgot to mention that there looks to be a ceramic capacitor across the black wire and red wire.
