The fact that it takes three layers of analysis to expose the simple complexity of Kim Burrell's compositional elegance reveals her multiple blessings while solidifying you as my new favorite aural music theoritician.

Doctor Wilson you NEVER cease to amaze me. You are the quintessential example of what a musical genius conveys. The Theoretical approach of Gunther Schuller and Nicolas Slimonsky mixed in with Heart, Passion and Soul! If you don't mind me using some Urban Vocab. "DO YO THANG MANE!!" WE SEE YOU!! WE SEE YOU!! Again and as always Thank you sir. Peace, Prosperity and Blessings upon you, your family and ALL that you set your hands to do. Shalom

Sean! ✊🏿I used to always go for perfect pitch, but now I go for relative...but perfect pitch for the bass and maybe the highest note or melody note. Saves so much time! Never thought to put an explanation of terms to the process. Man, you are really helping people to put hands and mind on this art and related skills!
@SeanWilsonPiano

yeah dude!! trying to explain the whole thing is difficult because I usually just DO it.. but yes, using relative for chords is the way to go and saves a lot of time. There is no way I could crank out videos as fast if I was using perfect.

Harmonic upper and inner-structures comprise the chord system that creates both consonance and dissonance for the amazing music produced and performed out of the gospel music community. Deeper than superficial runs and fills and mega-production packages to sell over the internet, musical sculpting in this manner carries a component of spirituality that conservatory training or classical music cultural-elitism cannot surpass. There also exists a scientific approach to harmonic structuralism that is non-ambiguous. Technical virtuousity fails to surpass inspirational vibration. Though technology has afforded the ability for many people around the world to access and reproduce the sonorities presented in gospel music it can never codify with certainty the emotional content it carries forward to the listener as it travels to various cultures in a global sense. This can be considered miraculous or the 'miracle' factor. Thank you for embracing the aural qualities inherent in the diasporic musical-spiritual science identified as Black American Gospel Music. Great work. Give thanks.

Hello Sean. First and foremost awesome videos. You are really giving folks major keys to success. Wanted to see if you could help me. I have been playing the piano for almost 7 years now (self taught) and I have studied a lot of music theory when I was young and understand most of what you are doing and how you are doing it. My issues remains, I think, is not having technical training which is hurting me in some regard being the fact that I envisioned and correctly guessed the chords that would work well with that bass line in the video (particularly the first three notes) but always have a trouble letting the top notes play as the melody. My issues that I have trouble getting the right inversion when I need them, so that hurts my flowing when playing. I usually end up playing the right chords but wrong inversion, which hurts me a lot when trying to play classic because I revert back to basic triads when that happens. Ofcourse, different chords give it a different flavor, but I would like to play them the way they should sound occasionally with my chords, as well implement seamless walk downs/up and progression that follow the melody nicely in other situations. Would you suggest any ideas or tips?
@SeanWilsonPiano

+Joba A sounds like if you just keep doing what you've been doing you should be ok. Getting the chords right on the very first try isn't the goal anyway.. if you're playing inversions correctly at least you are guessing the quality correctly which is better than most

You've kind of done something like this in the past by calling out notes names but have you approached it by just "singing" the chord and recreating that chord on the piano and then writing the notes down or is the way you showed in this video how you've evolved your process over the years that best works for you?
@SeanWilsonPiano
7 жыл бұрын
+Michael Daugherty you mean evolved over the "months" lol... yes, i have evolved. well the explanation has evolved. since i am showing an example of hearing the "whole" chord as opposed to individual notes within. teaching relative pitch is difficult so my method may change a few times lol

Hey Sean Great video!!I noticed how around 18 min you had that you used the bass note to determine the top note, is this always the case? when I'm figuring out chords It always seems like the top note is the same as the bass line, even if the melody is different it's weird I don't know how to explain it really lol

+Carl Clark to be honest with you i didnt notice it until i rewatched the vid and was adding my words at the bottom... i guess for me is was more coincidental. but that is an interesting observation. I will need to keep a closer eye on that...
