i just got one of these along with a Delphina. any thoughts on the audient i44? vs say a motu m4?

Great video! I was wondering if you could tell us more about your mic placement and gain settings for this particular recording. I have the Edwina as well and I've been playing around a lot with gain/placement when recording solo acoustic guitar. Not sure if I've found the sweet spot, or if one exists (besides the advertised 1in to 18in sweet spot). Thanks!

Hey Chris - It was 12" away, right around the 12th fret area, parallel to the fretboard, on axis. Nothing fancy. Here's a tip - when listening for how far away to put a mic (particularly a cardioid mic) the big things you want to listen for are 1) ambience and 2) low end. Every guitar is different, and every room is different, and every situation is different (picked vs plucked vs strummed etc). Use the distance to get more or less low end. If you need a more intimate performance (one that feels close to you), but the low end is too strong, it's either a) the mic or b) the guitar. It also completely depends on YOUR preference of sound. There are a lot of players out there that THINK they have the right guitar for them, but they don't. Changing the instrument itself can completely change the list of appropriate microphones. That all being said, I find the Edwina to sound best 10-18" away. On vocals it can be a little closer, but on instruments, I like it a little backed up. I might put it closer on something like a mandolin, to help beef up the low end with the proximity effect of the mic. Hope that helps! OH - in terms of "gain settings" on the pre - I don't know what to say about that...I turn it up until it's loud enough. haha. Because it was an API 312, there's no pre/post gain, so I can't "drive" the pre. I usually gain stage things around -18 RMS, try to keep all peaks below -6dBFS. Hope that helps!

Thank you so so much for this very thorough and informative reply. I did not know any of that haha, so thoroughness very much obliged! I had been keeping my edwina around 12-14 inches away, parallel, and pointing at the bridge (i.e. just below the sound hole). I will try pointing to the 12th fret area and see how it sounds! Great demo! Thank you for this. I'm thinking of getting one for live use. Have you used it live on stage yet? If so, how do you rate the feedback rejection?

I haven't - I don't play out anymore, I'm in the studio full time, HOWEVER, I heard about these microphones from a friend of mine that tours the country with one, so it works well enough for him at least! Haha

Sari Abul Adel they're actually made specifically for live use, and are made to have absolutely outstanding feedback rejection.

+Vincenzo Del Lama they're very different, but that's not to say one is better than the other! Try them both, see what you like best. Think of microphones almost like camera lenses ... it's all about what works in a given situation, not really what's better or worse. Good luck!

It's a MUCH warmer sound with a laid back high end. Sounds more like a ribbon than a typical condenser.

I doubt that circuit was 5 bucks. Have you looked at the noise floor specs? But $550? Yup. Way over priced. Probably cost less than $60 to produce. Killer sounding mic though.

+C. Javier Benitez that's incorrect, Javier. All DIRECTIONAL microphones have proximity effect. Omnidirectional microphones are the only ones without proximity effect.
