It's only a movement retrospect. I don't remember anyone claiming to be a "new romantic" not like being a punk, a hippy or a mod. It was just "trendy" or "fashion victim". I wager a lot of people in the video didn't even know what new romantic even meant.

Depends on geography. In the US, classifications we’re much more generalized (and historically inaccurate)we were either classified as “New Wavers” “Goths” or “Punks”… but in England, the New Romantics were very aware of their scene and nomenclature. Strangely, the term “poser” (or “poseur”) was an accepted name for the (British)New Romantics’ affinity for showing off their ornamentation…but in the US, the term “poser” ended up meaning (approximately)someone who was faking it… (preppy office worker by day, teased hair and eyeliner at the clubs). That’s just looking at those two areas. I’d be interested to hear other countries perspectives on their 80’s scenes…

I was living off the Kings Road during the 80s and was probably 8 when this was filmed. London was a pretty depressed placed to live back then, if you were poor. For the rich kids in chelsea, it was different and they didnt care.

By the time these "poseurs and hicks" came to the King's Road, the Blitz and Club For Heroes were long gone. I remember chatting to Steve Strange at my flat above a well known store in the KR and him pointing out the ones he said he'd never have let in his clubs.

@@annother3350 I do not think that Britain in the early-mid 80's was that great a place to be in general...an especially not if you looked a bit out of the ordinary...as for football hooligans stopping their violence?...this was the worst peiod of hooliganism ever...the Heysel disaster was only 1-2 years away from this....and British clubs were banned from European competitions for 5 years around this time

@@thomasandersen6719 My South London School went from the first year I attended in the mid 80s, when BNP racists would come into the schoo grounds and beat any black boys they found, to a few years later, we were all dancing to house music together. All the 'firms' disbanded in the early 90s

Black people and arabs were there, but just not in these clips. The Worlds End estate in chelsea was already black and arab with working class white and irish, philipino, portuguese and south americans. Sutton Dwellings(estate just off the kings road) was also mixed by the time this video was filmed.

If this is post Blitz Club(1979-81?), and a year or so before the football disaster someone mentioned below, this must be 1983 or 84. Nobody was really dressing like this by 1985.
