In 99, on May 23rd (cpl days before Tony Saunders injury) i was 8 years old and went to the Angels Vs Rays. Getting hit with a 300 foot foul ball in batting practice. Knocking out my 2 front teeth. For my suffering the team had me throw out the first pitch on my Birthday. July 18, 99. Rays V Phillies. I got to meet the entire team (besides Canseco who was on the DL). John Flarrety (catcher) gave me a bat, Dave Martinez gave me batting gloves and then ofc i got meet Wade Boggs. He sat and talked to me for a little bit. I also got to meet Curt Schilling also, who was the Phils starter that day. Thank you for this, the Rays, especially those early teams, get next to no shine.🙏🙏🙏

What an experience. Getting hit with that ball seems like it was worth it

@And That's Baseball yessir. Painful af but worth it in the end. I had ball signed by the whole 99 team (beside Canseco) and 2 pictures of Boggs and I. One signed "future 3000 hit club" and the second ones signed, "3000 hit club". Thing's from that day are some of my most prized possessions.

I'm an Orioles fan who started following the (Devil) Rays in 2000. I remember such wonders as Jason Smith, Jason Tyner, who never had a MLB home run, Brent Abernathy, Jared Sandberg, Jason Conti, etc. When Crawford, Huff, and Baldelli came up, they had a glimmer of hope. I also remember watching McGriff's second go around on the team and was sad when he was released. It was a crime (dog) that he had to wait this long to make the HoF.

Dave Dravecky(SF) is the worst arm injury caught on tape(and it’s not even close either). He had to get his arm amputated and(obviously) only has one arm now.

There was also Tom Browning's (CIN) injury in 1994 in San Diego. You can clearly see his pitching shoulder separate from his body before he crumbles to the ground and he goes limp.

@@AndThatsBaseball for sure. Hamilton got it together in the end but missed to much to live up to his potential. Toe just suffered from underprivileged upbringing, a product of his environment but his raw talent was babe ruth level

I pitied those early Rays teams. I know expansion teams take awhile to take off, but man it felt like Tampa was finding themselves forever. Their future now being constant contenders just makes me smile as a fan of the game. Plus those jerseys rule. I miss you colorful psychedelic jerseys...

Gosh the Devil Rays sounds like a little league team name. With an ugly logo for a team filled with past their prime players that have to play in that ugly(yet cozy) warehouse. But there were a few thousand of us that loved that team from Wilson Alvarez's first pitch. I was seven years old that first season. Going to see the Devil Rays play, and often lose, started my love for the team and baseball in general. I even got to see Wade Boggs hit his 3000th hit in person. My Dad and I were sitting in the TBT party deck, known back then as "The Beach", where you could buy a ticket for as low as three dollars, maybe a little more when the Yankees and Red Sox were in town. The Devil Rays were a unique baseball team to say the least.
