This is really enjoyable and precious footage - I think it's easy to forget that filming anything in 1990 involved carrying a large, bulky and conspicuous camcorder around - thank goodness there were some people prepared to go to such trouble so that we could enjoy these vids 25 years later - many thanks! :)

You'd be hard pressed to find better footage of the Class 91s looking so clean and new. Obviously it looks fantastic in this classic livery, but for me the thing that sets it apart from the 125 is how it laid the groundwork for what we take for granted today. Electrification wasn't new, but to do it faster than the 125 with many of the technologies that were learned from the ATP project, the powered doors and taper design, the improved tilting, more advanced bogies and general conveniences of the new coaches, it really feels like the finished article and an aspirational transport. Thanks for sharing!

These trains have been part of my childhood. Since 2010 every year we went up to London on one of these. Used to marvel at them in Leeds station. Wish they weren’t being retired

The liveries. The cohesion of the industry. Now a gravy train for consultants,asset-strippers,carpetbaggers to play trains & get fat just as with any other public service.Pay more to receive less. When will people wake-up to it all?

Ian McAdam BR had sorted itself out to an extent by the 1990s and they did have some decent liveries, but rose tinted spectacles should be taken off. It was starved of investment during the 80s and 90s, hence why the number of HSTs was cut and projects like IC250 were cut. The current system isn't ideal but the amount of investment going into the network is impressive.

This loco has never looked better, wearing the Swallow livery was what it was designed to do! The GNER livery looked good, but the Swallow was iconic! Sad to think that Virgin are replacing all but half a dozen of these icons with foreign built 'muck'!

Owen Evans Hi, it may not be muck, but it lacks character to me, it looks just like the rest of the trains, the Hitachis and the Pendilino. It doesn't have the appearance of an HST or 91.

From a spotters point of view they just sound like a Hoover as they go by at slow speeds. You can hear the traction motors faintly in the cab above a certain speed (from footplate videos on YT), not sure if you can hear them if one goes by fast. I love them since they are one in the eye for BR haters; btw they were described as `State of the art DC' when launched. In particular I love their chime horn. A pity they only went 140 mph for a short time. `Another loco (91031, now 91131), hauling five Mk4s and a DVT on a test run, ran between London King's Cross and Edinburgh Waverley in 3 hours, 29 minutes and 30 seconds on 26 September 1991. This is still the current record. The set covered the route in an average speed of 112.5 mph (181.1 km/h) and reached the full 140 mph (225 km/h) several times during the run.' Wikipedia Class 91).

They did look great in this livery - the Class 91 front lights and black grill looked sleeker before the chrome guards were added. Apparently they used to keep getting smashed in bird strikes though. The bit at 11:30 is a rare sight - are those Mk2s?
