This unique production in world music, released to celebrate Earth Day on 22 April, 2020, is an amalgam of two concerts in two countries & continents (Tiruvaiyaru, India and Sacramento, USA) in two different contexts (solo and orchestral). The striking feature though is that it follows the time & space travel of ONE composition (the evergreen Niravadhi sukhada) in one raga (Ravichandrika) by one composer (Tyagaraja, who spent a considerable part of his life on the banks of the river Cauvery between 1767 & 1847), highlighting the fact that be it Cauvery or California, 18th Century or 21st, our planet is one and most precious to all of us, something that Covid 19 has brought into sharp focus in recent months.
Concept, vision, composition, arrangement & improvisation: Chitravina N Ravikiran, also the lead artist.
Conductor: Maestro Michael Neumann
Co-Artists: Members of Sacramento Youth Symphony, Charumathi Raghuraman & Anantha R Krishnan in the Spirit of India concert, Sacramento, California in May 2012.
Akkarai Subhalakshmi, Neyveli Narayanan & Ernakulam Ramakrishnan in Tiruvaiyaru Tyagaraja Festival in Jan 2017.
Hailed as "Mozart of India" (Wisconsin State Journal & Belgium TV) and known for his "Teasing precision & dazzling effects" (New York Times) and for "Taking Indian music to new audiences" (CNN), Ravikiran's maiden stage appearance was at age two, first vocal concert was at age 5 and first chitravina (21-string slide) concert was at age 12. He has composed over 800 compositions including dance and orchestral works and has also set music to over 1400 compositions of other composers. Ravikiran has been decorated with a number of awards across the world for his contributions.
