The motion of the Earth may be divided into two categories:
Rotation: When the earth rotates on its axis, it is called rotation motion. The Earth rotates on its axis at a speed of 15 degrees in an hour and completes a full rotation of 360 degrees in 24 hours. Day and night occur due to the rotation of the Earth. On the rotation of the earth, the part which is in front of the sun, there is day and the part which is in the opposite direction of the sun, there is darkness or night. The Earth's axis, an imaginary line, is inclined at an angle of 66.5° to its orbital plane. The circle on the globe that separates day from night is called the circle of light.
Revolution: When the earth moves around the sun in a circular path, it is called revolution. The Earth needs about 24 hours to complete one complete revolution around the Sun. The average speed in Earth orbit is 30 km/s (108,000 km/h or 67,000 mph). This speed is so fast that the diameter of the Earth is covered in seven minutes and the distance to the Moon in four hours. The plane formed by the Earth's orbit and passing through the centre of the Earth is called the 'orbital plane' or 'axial surface'. The seasons change as the Earth revolves around the Sun.
