I love it when artists have an actual science background and explain things properly instead of being an artist all their lives, read something for 30 mins online, and then try to be "sciency" with an air of actual proficiency. Thanks for being one of the good ones Hajra.

I know this is an older video, but I just found it and LOVE your clear, easy-to-follow approach. Around the 7 minute mark where you show the colors you used along the color wheel and how you created the blends is AMAZINGLY helpful. Thank you so much for taking the time to make this video. Thank you!!

I do use myself for certain artworks (hey, I'm free and always available as a reference!), and this gal does have some similarities with me like black hair and bangs/fringe, but she's a study of an old golden age Clive painting. But thanks for the compliment. :D

Seriously these are great videos. I'm trying to get the hang of gouache. It's been challenging but fun. Your videos are definitely helpful and encouraging. Thank you for your generosity. BTW when I saw that you painted with gouache and mentioned grisaille I immediately thought-"This lady teaches at an atelier or college".
@HajraMeeks

+Pete Mills Good guess! I'm a former university lecturer and still teach part-time. And it's true that it's only academics who seem to remember grisaille and gouache nowadays! Thanks a lot for your generous comments, and I'm sure you'll create amazing gouache pieces if you keep at the watercolor and gouache practice.

I've only seen two of your videos and you are already becoming one of my favorite current artists to watch. I notice you use these mediums in a very traditional sense - is that for teaching purposes? I tend to mix gouache with watercolor for pigment for economical purposes and use gouache for highlights (sometimes). I also love how organized you are and your links to science!
@HajraMeeks

+Jamie Cheney thanks, good to hear such nice comments! Yes, for teaching purposes, these are very traditional, non-mixed media in their approach. I was planning on doing future videos that mixed watercolor and gouache more once I had a handful of traditional approach videos established.

What brand of gouache do you enjoy using? I can't seem to find it in pans. I haven't worked with that yet and I'm thinking maybe it's time! Or should I just get the cretacolor? And where did you find ox gall in a pan? Thanks so much! You are very much appreciated!
@HajraMeeks

+Colleen M schminke gouache is very good, but as it's harder to use for me since it doesn't come in pans, I use the cretacolor bricks and they work very well. You can buy ox gall in a pan from Schmincke, either at your art store or online like I did--I think mine came from Amazon. You're very welcome, and happy gouache adventures!

Do you have any tips on having a steady hand and brush control?
@TheySeeYou7
8 жыл бұрын
I find that forming a fist with your non-dominant hand and placing it next to your painting hand for it to stabilize against (kinda like a kickstand on a bike) helps keep it from shaking or trembling. This is especially useful when painting fine details and the like. I know it's not the best explanation, but I hope it helps :)

Personally I'm a chemist and was interested to hear you also majored in the sciences. I wonder what the appeal of art is to minds that lean towards science.

aaron young Appreciate your comment. i think science urges us to relish in learning, so we want to keep exploring different fields. I ended up with a BSc in Physics and then an MSc in International History and then went back to graduate school again to study children's literature. I think one subject helps me understand the other subjects. Perhaps it sounds too sentimental, but I feel science and art are in everything we study so I find many things worth studying.

Hajra Meeks I also believe it's because the two base ideologies clash, sciences, particularly physical and life sciences, are grounded in fact and must be able to be replicated to be accepted, whereas art has no set MO or plan of attack, and is up to the individual to translate. i think a sense of fulfillment comes along knowing that you have skills not only in logic but in creativity. a balance that can be very hard to find.
