Going out, RIGHT NOW, and buying 3 bottles of Kikkoman Soy Sauce. That bottle is iconic and I am gutted that I don't already have one in the house. It was designed more than 60 years ago by Kenji Ekuan and hasn't changed one bit since it began production in 1961. THANK YOU for the great hummingbird feeder design. We get few around here (Tampa, FL) and I've planted flowers to encourage more. This will seriously help bolster our hummingbird activity.

No kidding. One year we had 2 feeders around the corner of the house from each other. One of the males found a spot in the lilac bush where he could watch both of them. Greedy little bastard wouldn't let anyone drink from either one if he could help it. I couldn't help wondering if he was spending more energy guarding both than he would have if he'd just stuck to one feeder and left the other to whoever else was around.

I painted flowers on mine using red and purple nail polish (looks great, and I'm no artist!) and made the frame using coat hanger wire, which was harder to work and not as pretty as your green clothesline, but I had it on hand. Your video is perfect as I was searching for DIY feeder ideas after learning the hard way, from putting out my first feeder, and as others have said, how jealously possessive one little rufous couple can be! But I also didn't want to break the bank with expensive feeders, as I don't care for the cheap plastic ones. And wouldn't you know it, my boyfriend had just finished off the last of the soy sauce. Beautyfull recording of the name giving "humming" sound at the end. Awesome. Here in germany we know them only from books or documentations. I'm a little bit jealous. EDIT: I must correct myself. Sometimes the homemade items are the most successful. It is surprising how expensive the commercially manufactured feeders cost. I once made a seed feeder for the other birds. I used an empty 2 liter soda bottle upended over a plastic gelatin mold, and connected the two with some wire. The birds really liked it. Later on, I bought a feeder that cost close to $10. I hung it in the same location where the homemade one had been. The visitor census dropped by about 50%.

The soy sauce bottles work great. It took the birds a couple days to figure out the soy bottles. Now the dominant male flies about the yard trying to protect all 5 feeders my neighbor and I have. Two are your soy sauce bottle idea. They were easy to make. I used 10ga copper for the coiling wire. The coils were much better after the 1st attempt, but the 1st attempt is feeding the birds. I will give away a couple soy bottle feeders once I find a couple more soy bottles to load into the coiled hangers which are now pre-made. And your ant excluder device works like a dream. Many thanks!

I should try this.. It's moving into winter and while we don't have many humming birds, we do have native bees and they may enjoy this.

After watching your video, the next morning, I went out to buy a bottle of soy sauce (dumped the sauce into another jar) and made one. So easy and I'm excited to try it out. There are lots of hummingbird living in the tree outside my window. I used a orchid support wire and that is very easy to bend. Just used my hand. Perfect size too! Thank you so much because I love my darling hummingbirds.

I live in Titusville Florida and we have all kinds of hummingbirds, but I was over at my best friend's house a couple months ago and we were looking at a plant from about fifteen feet away and it looked like a bunch of those big huge black bumblebees that we have here that'll chase you into the surf, and we got looking at them and they were little tiny hummingbirds! They were so little it was really hard to take pictures of them cuz they were moving so fast! I totally want to make one of these or a couple/few so I can give her one too!! I'm sure I can find a couple more friends that would like these also! thanks so much!

What an enjoyable video, I reside in Cuba 🇨🇺 and England. Thanks to you I will be making a few of these feeders when I return, to Havana, where you do have visits from Hummingbirds, even in the capital. I hope you realise how this video, will bring joy to many of my Cuban relatives. Thank you so much 😊

Brilliant! Beautiful! I would like to mention to keep your feeder out of direct sun. It ferments the sugar, which can make our hummers "drunk" and disoriented. Direct sun also accelerates the deadly mold.
@pocket83

Sugar wine takes a few weeks, and that's with adding yeast. Hummingbirds will drink a (well cleaned) bottle dry before mold can establish. Even if they don't, a feeder placed in the sun will drip dry much faster. ... The soy sauce bottle's small size has lots of advantages: it only holds 1/2 cup of syrup, which is an ideal amount for not-so-responsible hobbyists.

@@pocket83 thank you for the info! I gave my feeders away because I couldn't keep up with them on top of my animals and job hours. I had read they will drink from dirty (moldy) feeders . Your copper work is lovely.
