In the CST on one of the first nodes where you convert to Log C I see you leave tone mapping on. This seems a bit odd to me as this for mapping tones/bringing them in range to the gamma of your deliverable. I would leave tone mapping off when converting to a log gamma, because then you get an accurate conversion.

wow as always with impressive results! I would be very grateful if you could teach me how to do the process of creating each node step by step, since when I colorize an 8-bit/slog2/sgamut shot in davinci, certain parts of the image become grainy and that spoils everything that has been achieved, beforehand thank you, greetings from Peru!

From my tests, as seen in the video. SLOG2 works best with ITU709MATRIX instead of S-GAMUT. Switching to Davinci already helped a ton since it seems to handle 8bit much better than any other software. And using the right color space conversion inside of Davinci helps a ton as well. You also need perfect exposure to not get grain, that's why I switch between HLG and SLOG2 for certain lighting conditions.
@JimRobinson-colors

@@edouhoekie ITU709MATRIX defeats the purpose of using slog in the first place. You are then forcing a large color space bucket into a small bucket, in camera without any tone mapping. May as well shoot in natural - rec709. People do it because they don't know how to deal with it in POST. The idea is that if it is a large gamut that you can then pull in the data you require in the grade and set up the tone mapping and saturation compression to suit the shot.

@@edouhoekie I shoot with a sony 6500 + sigma 30 mm 1.4, but it still has the same bitrate so I don't think there's a difference, is there? I have also noticed that this problem of the grain is arising since I switched to Davinci Resolve, because in Adobe premiere it did not happen to me I think, despite these small details I am very happy with the result in Davinci Resolve there is no point of comparison with regarding color grading. anyway thanks for the info I will continue experimenting with image profiles and color spaces, the next goal is the sony 7s3! Right after slog 2, what do you think is the best profile to colorize between cine 2 and cine 4? taking into account that I do not have the HLG profile

@@manuellinarezarcos3193 Cine 4 is a very nice profile as well. Yeah those cameras also fake the S-gamut color space so it might be the same.

Just as a footnote - slog-2 in camera shouldn't be using a rec709 color space. It is possible I guess, but completely defeats the capabilities of capture being so limited to that gamut. In hundreds of footage given to me from Sony cameras - the input colorspace for slog-2 is always one of the S-gamut color space input. If you look at a CIE Chromaticity scope you will see that filming ot that will sometimes clip the gamut in R.G. or B. channels. I do see in the comments that the photographer chose that setting, just should be mentioned that that is not the norm and apparently was done by him, by choice.
@edouhoekie
2 жыл бұрын
Yes done by choice, S-gamut does the exact opposite it is supposed to do for me. It results in lots of artifacting shooting in 8bit no matter how you expose or grade it. Yet again this is my choice. It also does not defeat any of the capabilities you'd use SLOG2 for.
@edouhoekie
2 жыл бұрын
It also has nothing to do with not being able to deal with it in post. Even with proper color space management it creates artifacts in 8bit from my camera. S-gamut works nicely to change colors but in the very limited 8bit it doesn't behave as it is intended to, especially in slightly darker situations. In bright-bright daylight I do sometimes use S-gamut however, there it has no issues with retaining the data in 8bit (usually).

@@edouhoekie You're forcing a huge color space into a tiny colorspace with no regard to hard clipping. You are essentially sacrificing dynamic range and color clipping, because you don't know how to process slog properly. I think that is your choice, but when it gets put into a tutorial it's a different thing. Telling people to make mistakes, because it works for you, is what's wrong with a lot of youTube tutorials. But I do realize that this is not your tutorial, so you do what you do, but mentioning that doing that is not recommended by Sony or most colorists, is worth mentioning to people reading or watching these tutorials.

@@JimRobinson-colors Sony A7iii full user manual also states: "S-Gamut setting does not support the whole S-Gamut color space; it is a setting to achieve a color reproduction equivalent to S-Gamut." It's not real S-gamut, it just mimics the color reproduction.
