It’s been almost 12 years since the sounds of a steam whistle has graced the Aughwick Creek Valley. Thankfully that sound has triumphantly returned in the Winter of 2023, when the newly revived East Broad Top Railroad hosted their first steam-powered Winter Spectacular in many years. To add to that, the first locomotive chosen for revival was one that has yet to run in the preservation era prior to this year - 1916 built 2-8-2 Baldwin #16. We first see her getting ready for a days work at the historic roundhouse. CMO Dave Domitrovich gives a little insight on the engine’s unique design. Then, we see her recreate a scene from her working history as she hauls a string of coal hoppers for a morning freight run on the line. We’ll see the freight run pass the historic coal tipple in Rockhill Furnace yard, McMullin’’s Summit and near Runk Road underpass. After which, she hauls her first ever tourist excursions. We’ll catch a few scenes trackside as well as go for a ride through the Valley. Even getting a first hand look at the Wye movements at Colgate Grove and Rockhill Furnace from the rear of the caboose. Please enjoy this triumphant return of true American history!
