This was so predictable with the re-opening, As much as I love visiting Maui, it can wait until things calm down. When I am visiting I always remember that I am a guest and show absolute respect for the culture and those lucky enough to call this Island home. I make a sincere effort to not stand out as a visitor and blend in and that means among other things, being a polite motorist on the Hana Hwy and always pulling over when possible allowing others to get by me, not trespassing on private property anywhere on the island. If I hope to be treated with the spirit of Aloha then I must offer that myself 1st.

This is the price for Paradise??!! What happened to protecting the Hawaiian environment? What happened to protecting the Hawaiian islands? What happened to protecting the Hawaiian culture? What happened to protecting the Hawaiian people? What happened to the morals, values, respect, consideration, love of family, love of land, everything that makes Hawaii the Beauty of Hawaii, the Soul of Hawaii...what happened to it all?? Ask the governor, ask the city/county council members, ask the sell outs and see if you get an HONEST ANSWER! Just look around and see for yourself who's ruining/running the state, and Our Country.

When I visited Hawaii at the beginning of the month I noticed that there is a lot of corruption, a lot of "middlemen", and a lot of bullshit/lying. There are many transplants on the island who need to leave. They do not belong and they do not add integrity, culture, and value to the island, and yet they've been living there for many years. Those who do belong need to stop feeding them and start speaking out against them, that's my solution. I don't know who it is that's letting more people arrive than the island can hold, but I suspect it is these people who do not belong that I speak of.

I think these things should be implemented to decrease housing prices and environmental damage. 1) Locally born and Native Hawaiians are getting priced out of the housing market because out of state folks come in and buy up the homes and land. If not locally born or Native, I think there should be an out of state tax citizen increase on any property purchased relative to their income. And it should be a requirement that the property owner has to physically live in Hawaii to have property there. For example, if somebody from Kansas wants to move to Hawaii, then they need to pay a little bit extra in property taxes. A gradual increase in percentage as the income increases. So somebody making hundreds of thousands a year could get a 6% property tax increase and somebody making tens of thousands could get like a 2% property tax increase.(just throwing out example numbers). Then maybe put a cap on it and say they have to pay the out of state mover upcharge for 5-10 years something like that. I think this will deter all but the most determined to live in Hawaii. Is it fair? No. But neither is native Hawaiians on the street. They have more claim to the land than anyone else. 2) Set a yearly tourist quota. If there are more tourists than the quota allows, start a wait list. This will control traffic, and environmental breakdown. 3) Up the penalties for touching honu and other wildlife. And trespassing. 4) Require all travelers flying to Hawaii to watch an instructional on how to behave while on the islands. I'm visiting Hawaii in March, but I don't intend to be a disrespectful jerk. I intend to patronize local businesses. And not start trouble.

The gov gives out the building permits. The 2.2 millions home on the ocean isn’t going to a local. It’s bought by some rich person who will likely short term rent it out. Perhaps 2 people will stay there a few months of the year. The gov should for a period of time figure out how many need their own home, not sharing. Whatever number that is make housing permits for typical 1200ft or less 3bd homes with room for 2 cars and small yard. If a builder doesn’t meet their quota of these modest homes for modest price inland they don’t get permits for the overpriced condos and mega mansions after 5 years. Only modest local homes for the next 5 years. Hawaii is afraid to build. They only tend to build when the money comes from mainland or overseas. They think they are smart bringing cash into the state.

@@appleforever6664 Is that your rebuttal?😑 Besides my point was that of a public relations issue not the economy. In all 50 states Hawaii is last in education, highest cost of living, highest in homeless population, most traffic in the nation, and number one in the most endangered and extinct plants and animals than any other single place on earth; we are NOT thriving as a state or in anyway for that matter. In direct response to your statement, if the pandemic showed us anything, it’s that Hawaii could go, and went over a year without tourism. At the end of the day, the military stronghold of the pacific is worth far more than the pandemic relief funds offered, and it would be a cost I assure you the Feds would pay to float the civilian population for however long it needed to. Hawaii is also one of Monsanto’s key testing locations, God only knows how much money is there and not disclosed. Tourism is just an old tactic that stuck, originally used to keep Hawaii as part of the US. The military is the backbone of the American made economy of Hawaii, and before that was agriculture. In any case to say thrive is and has absolutely never been the case. As I stated it either stays the same, or it gets worse. Tourism does bring in a lot of revenue, but the dependency isn’t to the extent that most people are led to believe.

Just returned from Maui. Too many people for the resources for sure. Just not enough restaurants, grocery stores etc. Tough situation as owners of rental properties really need to rent their places after not doing that for a year. Too many restaurants still limiting capacity. Not sure if that's because they just don't have the staff and stock or of it's precautions for Covid. If everyone is being cleared for covid before arriving, I'm not sure the intent of limiting tables. My guess is many of the folks that are visiting now picked up flight and accommodations 6 months or so ago when the prices were cheap.

@@littleroots That’s what I heard & it sounded devastating. When we went in February, everyone from our Uber driver to hotel staff was so grateful for tourists. The young guy who gave my daughter 2 surf lessons was definitely happy for the $. He was telling us how bad it’s been. Maui is a treasure & people should treat it as such, I’m sure tourists can be entitled jerks sometimes. Some of us truly appreciate how special the islands are though. ✌🏼

@@justjudijjb3455 yes when i went last month we were supporting food trucks. They were so happy we were eating there because there wasnt that many people. You have other entitled people that dont want mainlanders there because there work isnt in tourism. It was funny because we couldnt go in restaurants unless spaced out but on the public bus everyone was inches away. The money calls the shots there.

Great vacation sitting in traffic. Most destinations now a days make you feel like cattle in line to the slaughter. When a pizza is $50 in Hawaii (please verify this) a $30 dollar parking ticket seems to instill fear in people?

Nah, it’s not $50 unless you get truffle flakes on it!😂

I would say that for a place that is typically over run with tourists, whether it be Maui, Venice, Iceland, Barcelona etc etc; that the easiest fix is - 1. limit the number of rental cars on an island, 2. limit the number of cruise ships that are allowed, 3. limit the number of tour buses that are allowed. But cities/states/countries just won't do it . Everyone complains - even the tourists complain there are too many tourists and ruin the experience of a place. The almighty tourism dollar is just too much I guess...

Why is Hawaii so car dependent? Hawaii is small and busy enough that it should be super easy to have transit that negates the need for tourists to rent cars.
