During 1957-58 I lived with my parents in those apartments on 45th & Pennsylvania. Walked from there to Lew Wallace for 8th grade classes. That area looks fairly good yet better than I expected. Gary was booming then. We left in the summer of 1958 & moved back to St Louis never to return to Gary. Sorry to see Lew Wallace HS torn down it was a good school. Thx for the memories.

I was born in Gary in 1970, my father graduated from Lew Wallace H.S. in 1966, retired from NIPSCO. My father grew up in Glen Park. In 1973 we moves to Michigan City, my grandfather owned Standard Auto Parts on Broadway. I think my grandparents home was on Delaware. I no longer live in IN, joined the military for 8 years and then became a cop in a big city for the past 24 years. I love coming back home and watching how Gary is actually improving year after year. Thanks for the memories , great video.

Man, I REALLY loved this video....I use to live at 5156 Virginia in Glen Park and so much of this looked so familiar....I took my wife and kid to the Village for some hot dogs a few years ago and decided to drive around...so much of it is kinda unrecognizable now (moved out of Gary in 83), but it brought back so many memories....I want to drive through Glen Park again, but these gas prices got me in check...do you have alot of other videos in Glen Park? Specifically in the 51st block around where the old Pittman Square use to be? Please go down through 51st!!! You said, "don't binge your videos"...too late man...I'm watching your videos like a Netflix series!

When I said the area looked pretty good I was talking about the area on 45th from Pennsylvania to Broadway, very familiar with that specific street as I must have walked it 200 times going to Wallace during the school year. Even though it was what, some 64 years ago. Of course much of the adjacent area is in terrible condition from what it was then. Back then Glen Park was a nice middle to upper middle class area. I followed your tour inside Wallace and the way condition the swimming pool was in gave me the creeps knowing that I learned to swim in that pool! Anyway keep the videos coming I thoroughly enjoy them as they bring back fond memories from long ago.

From 48-57 lived at 4639 Grant St ... Dad was the pastor at what originally was Hosford Park Baptist Church ... he moved it to Cleveland & Ridge ... changed the name to Grace Baptist Church ... we walked either 45th Ave past Billy & Buds carryout ... or we took a shortcut through the woods to Lew Wallace ... Dad left the ministry and we moved to Southwestern Ohio.

Thank you for sharing these great views of Gary. I have nice childhood memories of visiting Gary family who of course were steel folks. We'd come down from SW MI/NW IN farm/factory country, and they'd come up there for big farm-yard picnics and holidays. 1960s when (at least ours) extended families seemed to remain more in touch/geographically adjacent. Always interesting to see once-booming Rust Belt places like Gary, Detroit, Buffalo, etc. decline w/their abundant nice architecture now crumbling, but it's a dynamic common throughout history: no matter what monuments humans erect in a place, if/when it ceases to be productive/sustaining, they move on. The globe is littered w/ancient abandoned cities.

You are very welcome John. I enjoyed reading your comment and this is exactly what I was hoping for when I started the channel for people to see and give their opinions like this. I agree with you everywhere you go there is an abundance of beautiful architect just going to waste. Gary is so unique in that aspect. It is definitely one of the reasons that I was drawn to start documenting all these places before they got torn down. I have been doing this for eight years and still never ceases to amaze me. Sometimes it feels almost like uncovering a city after people have left. The abandoned buildings are one thing, but it just blows my mind of the wasted resources and dump trash anywhere attitude. If Gary could clean itself open, knock all these buildings down, it would be the best thing to do in my opinion. Once again, I really appreciate, you taking the time and going into detail about your feelings and I hope to hear from you very soon
