An artist from the East Side Gallery Initiative reads out the heart-wrenching story of the death of Çetin Mert, a 5 year-old Turkish boy from West Berlin (Kreuzberg) who accidentally fell into the Spree on his birthday in May 1975 while playing with friends, and could not be rescued because of the Wall.
The boy drowned in front of many onlookers who could do nothing, because of the heartless absurdity of this border. This was on a demo day against the partial destruction of the East Side Gallery (and of the longest remaining part of the Berlin Wall) to make way for luxury apartments.
