Doesn’t matter what he thinks Ted. I’m in HVAC since 1988. If he would have had it serviced even a few times in the last 10 years you might have caught that inducer going bad before the warranty ran out. He would have gotten the part for free and just payed the labor to replace.

When you said there was an Easter Egg in the furnace, I thought that's what might have broken the draft inducer! Oh, to have heard the noise that probably made when the furnace ate it! It's disappointing that the distributor wasn't willing to fudge the warranty a bit in the name of customer goodwill.

42 year's in the HVAC industry performing service, repair and installs has been BRUTAL to this OG's body. Residential being the worst compared to commercial and industrial service. Some basements, attics and tight crawl spaces are a nightmare. Ted is a tall drink of water as I am 6'2" which has been a curse and blessing. Great job Ted. Keep the videos coming. But wasn't the air handler in warranty when he called and made the complaint of loud noises and eventual failure? So shouldn't it be worked on under warranty since the noise and failure happened while under warranty. I guess the main question is, when did he call for service? If it was after the warranty time when he called for service, then yeah, no warranty work will take place. But if he called before the warranty expired, then I would think its covered under warranty since the air handler failed while under warranty still.

Bad / worn ball bearings. Being a vintage computer collector, I've had some old hard drives from the 80s where the bearings sounded just like that. I also had a pool pump motor that suffered the same fate, got 100x as loud, and ended up pressing in new bearings. With new bearings it was so quiet it was hard to tell if it was running. The Easter egg in the plenum takes the cake!

One of my American Standard units with a 10 year P&L had a failed variable speed motor go out 10 years and 2 days. They would not honor warranty. It went out the week end of July 4th back in 2017. In the past 14 years, I replaced a Variable Speed module (under warranty) and the out of warranty motor on the upstairs unit. Not a bad record for my two 18 SEER Systems.

That thing had a lot of rollout on ignition. Was the collector box ok? They crack all the time and the furnace can't draw enough draft properly. But, these things are backwards and always light violently, due to the fact ICP designed the ignitor to be at the end of the gas manifold, and not at the beginning at the first burner. Dumb.

Besides the dislike for gas fired furnaces in hard to reach attic spaces, I especially hate gas fired furnaces in a crawl space with a dirt floor. How much dust and mold is sucked up through the system and into the house? When the tech first opened the door, I thought, oh good a concrete pad down there. NOPE! Dirt.

Seems like its always a crap chinese sleeve bearing that fails on those fan motors. The one item that is subject to the most wear and manufacturers use the cheapest part for that. The extra cost for a true sealed ball bearing would have been what, $5 or so which dwarfs this no heat call of maybe $400.
@gor312
2 жыл бұрын
From the sound of this motor, it was most likely a ball bearing. Sleeve bearings are actually about as reliable as ball bearings, when they are properly applied. The problem here is that these inducer motors are cheap garbage and run extremely hot, which dramatically shortens the life of any bearing. Ball bearings can be also highly susceptible to dirt contamination. If they had spent 50 cents more on nicer materials, the motor would run cooler and would last 50 years instead of 10.
