Black currants make a delicious jam just like blueberries. Just like blueberries too, the secret to making a jam that will actually spread on toast is to gently pulse or buzz the fruit with a handblender. If you don't buzz the fruit a bit, it'll just be currant compote, not necessarily bad, but not exactly spreadable.
The recipe is easy: no pectin, low-ish sugar compared to most jams and jellies. It's fine to water bath can and store in the pantry, give as gifts, etc.
As a bonus, you can even make the jam with fruit that's been soaked in alcohol for making cassis, the blackcurrant liqueur. If I use alcohol soaked fruit I like to combine it with half fresh or frozen fruit to calm the alcohol taste. It's very good, and basically like getting two products for the price of one.
