I definitely use Controller for HomeKit and have the lifetime license. One warning about the new update is you can't scan a room, save, go off and do something else, scan another room, scan a further room, scan the common hallway, and expect to stitch separate scans back together into one floor plan. You should also have everything in the house uncluttered and furniture where you want it before you start. Then you have to have the battery charged and the time to scan the whole house all at once.
@JohnVanderbeck
3 ай бұрын
Yeah this was/is my biggest concern. I'll be honest, I have a rather cluttered house. I really want the option to edit/delete the things it detects as "furniture" so I can clean up the floor plans. Plus honestly I'd rather have the raw room plans WITHOUT any furniture because that may change in the future.
@ShaneCreates

My house was not really cleaned or declutterred before doing the scans and it came out well. It only recognizes certain things as furniture or appliances so I don’t think it will detect things as furniture that aren’t.

@@ShaneCreates In the first room I scanned, there was a folding table against the side of a wall with some stuff on it and under it. The folding table showed up as a box in the floor plan. Thankfully none of the stuff showed up. On the other side of that room is a wall that I have a lot of storage boxes stacked up side-by-side. That showed up as one large box protruding from the wall. I ended up removing the project table against the wall before I started the full house floor plan scan. All in all the floor plan scanning goes rather quickly and ignores nearly all of the "clutter". It is just best to know, what you scan is what you get, because I see no editing tools for afterwards

This looks like a major upgrade, to me. I've always loved 3D floor plans, and having one that commands my HomeKit accessories is even better! I'll definitely look into getting Controller. The price is a bit of a stumbling point, but we used to have to pay that kind of money for just about every program we bought (back before they were all rebranded as "apps").

This is going straight on my wall-mounted iPads. I love this look and hope it will make it easier for the family (read: wife. The kids have mastered it for a while) or guests. Hey Shane! I’ve been following you for years, and I’ve gotten a ton of great advice from your videos, so thank you very much for all the smart home inspiration you’re giving us all! One thing that has been bothering me a bit lately is how your reviews are now almost always sponsored by the manufacturer of the product you’re reviewing. For me, this practice kind of changes the whole setting from a review to an infomercial. For example in the beginning of this video where you say you’re a fan of using third party apps to compensate for the limitations of the native Apple HomeKit app.. in the old days you would have mentioned not just that one app you’re reviewing but also alternatives like the Eve app. It’s great to see your hard work paying off and your channel growing but I’d be more careful to select sponsors for each video who have no conflict of interest with the topic of the video. Just my 2 cents, all the best from Denmark!
@ShaneCreates

Thank you for the continued support. And as always, I appreciate your feedback. I have always been very selective regarding the brands that I collaborate with. I only agree to work with brands that I support and can recommend. If I endorse a product, it is a product that I have used. I will never accept a sponsorship for a brand or product that I have not used or do not like. If I make a video about a product, I always do my best to provide the good and the bad from my experience with that product, whether it is sponsored or not. I still make videos on products that are not sponsored. I try to make videos on the products that I think you, the audience, wants to see. And whether they are sponsored or not, I’d never make a video on a product that was absolute trash. So maybe I look at it a little differently… I say, why not work with the brands that I love? The brands that I’d be making videos about anyways, sponsored or not? To this video specifically, it was intended to cover a very specific new feature in the controller for HomeKit app. It’s not a feature that’s available on any other 3rd party HomeKit app, so I didn’t think there was a need to mention any other apps. There was no other reason for not mentioning them. There is no alternative to this app. I’ve mentioned this app many times in the past (not sponsored) and even done similar videos covering specific features of the app (again, not sponsored). So I was pretty excited that the developers wanted to collaborate on this to share with you a very cool, new feature. I’ve been using the app for years and I’ve always recommended it to HomeKit users. Sorry for the long-winded reply, but I wanted to share my perspective and my stance on the subject of sponsors. I hope it helps. Again, I do always greatly appreciate honest feedback and certainly take it all into consideration. Thank you for sharing and thank you again for your continued support of the channel. 😃
@goingforgrapes3631

Thank you for getting back to me, it really is much appreciated. I get where you are coming from, and to be honest, maybe I didn’t choose the best video to give you this feedback for (totally agree that this new feature in interesting, and it’s awesome that you have become such an authority that all these companies reach out to you) - it’s just something that has been increasingly on my mind. For example, a little over a week ago you reviewed the new Aqara U50 with the title “Best budget smart lock” in a video that is sponsored by Aqara. I know you’re not one to bullshit anyone, but I still think reviews and product announcements sponsored by the manufacturer are a slippery slope.
@ShaneCreates
3 ай бұрын
@@goingforgrapes3631 I understand where you are coming from as well. As you mentioned, I'm "not one to bullshit anyone." And I appreciate that. Again, just know that if I'm covering a new product in a sponsored video, I've used the product and I think the product and/or brand is good. Not to say it's perfect. Nothing usually is and I always share any issues that I find, if any. Aqara is one of the most requested brands that I cover here on the channel and is also a brand I've used for many years myself. Again, why not partner with them to share new and exciting products that the audience wants to see anyways? That doesn't mean I'm being dishonest about anything. When I titled the video "Best budget smart lock," it's because I do think it's the best budget smart lock. I would certainly not have said that otherwise. People may not realize this, but I receive an overwhelming amount of inquiries every single day from different brands (as I'm sure most creators do). Personally, I reject about 95% of those inquiries as my primary goal is to create the videos and share the products that I think you, the audience, would be interested in. And if I cannot recommend a product in good faith, I would never accept a sponsorship. Your trust is very important to me. That's why I'm always honest about the good and the bad, whether sponsored or not, and I hope that comes through in my videos.

Hi Shane, thanks for the video, very interesting. I was just wondering if there's an option in the Controller app (or another third party app maybe?) that would allow dimming the screen of the ipad and reactivate it when the camera is detecting someone ? Basically I would not want my iPad screen to stay on 24/7 but only when I am in front of it ready to monitor or trigger some automation. Thanks!

There are a couple of hacks you can use to achieve this. You may have even noticed the iPad waking up when I approached it in the video. I am using the iPad in "Guided Access" mode. A motion sensor close by will send a notification to the iPad and wake it up whenever it detects motion. Here is a short video I made a while back explaining it: kzitem.infoX9yr0s1kOX8

Hi Joe. There are a few options. If price is no concern, it's hard to beat Lutron Serena. That is probably the gold standard. But they come with a huge price tag and do require a Lutron bridge. The more reasonable option is either SmartWings or Eve Motion Blinds, both very similar to each other. With these you still get great quality, at about half the price. They both connect via Matter over Thread. I hung the SmartWings Outdoor shades round my entire back porch (check it out in this video: kzitem.info/news/bejne/0J-Cq4ObgIGEfno).
