Matt, I make my brace shorter then the shelf so I have room to make small adjustments. For a shelf behind the couch, I left it about two feet shorter so I had room to center it. Wall studs are not always where you need them.

When I do my floating shelves I use a 3/8" to a 5/8" all thread that I thread into 2 wall studs. I messed up on my first one because I didn't check the spacing on the wall studs to see if they were on 16" or 24" center. Still came out decent but you could see the offset for the 2 shelves I built. I came across a video of a guy who showed step by step of how to build them and when he finished the shelf, he put 3 bags of 50 lb concrete on it and it held. Let's just say that I was hooked. Just subscribed to your channel today and I must say from the few videos I have watched so far, very nice work!!! Thanks for the lessons and I look forward to many more.

That's a cool idea! You could make the face a false front for a drawer and build a drawer on the inside of the box so you can just slide out a whole drawer. You could hinge the bottom where you could make it drop down and have a compartment there. I'd probably want to make one of the sides where you could remove it though if I wanted something hidden. You've given me some pretty cool ideas that I might actually like to try. John The Builder Malecki and Fix This Build That both have some pretty cool hidden compartment builds. You could check them out and combine them with Matt's super cool and easy floating shelves and have a really neat thing going.

You have a compound miter saw. Why not miter the boards so you don't have edges showing on the top and bottom (or face in your older version?) 10% more effort for 50% improvement in product.

@snarfersaxe

He said that in the first part that you can do thay i think the pocket holes are a cleaner finish especially for the top. When I have nade floating shelves that have been about 1.5 to 2 inch i had to pocket hole the top and nail the bottom
@steelsunpi
4 жыл бұрын
Wondering about making it thinner so it doesn't look as bulky. Maybe rip a 2x4 down the middle for the wall mount part and have it only 1 3/4" thick instead of 3 1/2". And since the bottom isn't weight supporting, but only a cover, make it baltic birch ply or something. That way the top is 3/4" thick, the 1 3/4" center, and the 1/4" bottom makes the hole thing only 2 3/4" thick and still strong.

So I must ask here because something is driving me nuts!!! I see you do it as well all wood that I buy is rounded at ends when you meet them Up against each other I noticed a small 1/16” small small gap!! Drives me nuts I fill it in with a very little wood putty am I being too picky?? Another way is do what you do and put on planner or table saw! But that’s more time!! Am I being to picky??
@731Woodworks

I remove them on almost all projects. Either use the table saw method like I did here or a jointer will remove them fast.

731 Woodworks gotcha!! I will start doing this , thanks Matt.
@tylerommen5452
3 жыл бұрын
Okay, help me out here with this jointing method cause I still don’t get it. You’re saying the level gives the board a “straight reference”; is that not what the fence does? So why would you need the level if the fence is also straight? Unless your fence isn’t straight which sounds like a significant problem that would need to be resolved...
@731Woodworks
3 жыл бұрын
The level moves with the board, thereby giving the board a straight edge to reference. If you just use the fence, the edge being cut is referencing the other side of the board. Which is typically never truly straight.
@tylerommen5452
3 жыл бұрын
@@731Woodworks ohhhh I gotcha now! That makes more sense. The imperfections aren’t sliding across the fence and saw, just the saw because the board doesn’t slide across the level but slides with the level. I’m catching what you’re throwing now! Thanks!

Great video! Thank you. One thing I haven't seen mentioned is you're actually supposed to put the pocket holes on from the outside and cap or fill the hole in with a plug. That way it's not drilling into the edge of the board. But I'm the case I'm sure it's still plenty strong enough. 🥰

kzitem.info/news/bejne/w6-v32x4cYBjfII - why not make that drawers? Or just a hinged cover - so you create some additional storage space? Never enough, in a bathroom... Only thing you need is to mount the sides into a stud (not just the back).

Great video. Some finishing ideas. Beat the wood up with an ice pick and chain, then sand, for a distressed look. You can also apply two colors of paint, thinned and wiped. You can use plywood for the top and bottom. Or use "real wood" if they show. You can make thinner shelves by ripping down the block that goes on the wall and sizing the ends appropriately. Another idea. Cover your wire shelves with a piece of plywood on the top and a piece of nice wood on the face. Nobody will know there is wire under them. Veneered plywood is a great alternative to hardwood. Edge band if the plys show.
