Welcome to our channel! In this video, we're going to show you how to create your very own origami Jutte baton out of paper. The Jutte baton is a traditional Japanese weapon, but our paper version is perfect for children's games or cosplay. It's simple, fun, and easy to make, so let's dive in and get crafting!
A Jutte baton is a traditional Japanese weapon that was used by police officers and guards in feudal Japan. Some key details about the Jutte baton:
It has a short, blunt wooden or metal stick or shaft, usually around 12-18 inches long.
One end of the shaft has a short, perpendicular projection or prong coming off one side, usually 3-5 inches long. This prong is often hooked or curved.
The primary purpose of the hooked prong was to catch and entangle an attacker's weapon, such as a sword, allowing the wielder of the jutte to control and subdue the attacker at close range.
It was used as a non-lethal law enforcement and self-defense weapon to restrain and capture criminals and assailants rather than inflict fatal injuries.
The shaft could also be used for blocking and striking if needed.
It takes skill to properly utilize the jutte in combat to entrap weaponry without having one's own weapon trapped. Specific martial art styles were developed for using it.
The jutte is a fascinating weapon from the pages of Japanese history. Its unique asymmetrical design allowed feudal police and guardsmen to entangle swords and capture criminals without lethally injuring them. I thought it would be fun to try making one from paper and see just how functional an origami jutte baton could be!
Crafting the jutte shape from folded paper tubes and perpendicular prongs was surprisingly straightforward. Gluing the parts together and adding some decorative flourishes at the grip resulted in a lightweight paper weapon replica reminiscent of ancient martial arts.
Of course paper lacks the strength for combat applications. For costumes, decor, or children’s games, this easy origami project adds an eye-catching historical prop to enhance swashbuckling fun.
See how it’s done in my new video. With basic folding techniques and some clever locked joins, you can wield a bit of samurai spirit in your own homemade jutte baton. The elegant yet practical design has endured through the centuries for good reason!
