To give your hands some protection when working with hardware cloth, invest in a pair of work gloves. It can help reduce blisters and cuts.

I just tried using coconut coir MULCH that I got from Amazon, it is so much nicer , no mess and stays moist a lot longer. Other wise I do the same steps.

I have black zip ties that look just like yours, and when I cut all the excess plastic (like you did) they come apart. Maybe the ones I’m using are low quality, could you provide a link to yours?

I’m wondering if a larger wire cutter would provide more cutting leverage resulting in less hand fatigue when using them. You are right in that each moss pole requires a lot of cutting and that would be tiring. I’m not sure if it’s ok for me to mention a brand in this comment but I happen to know that Channellock makes excellent wire cutters in a suitable size for your needs. Nice job.

Do you have a video of putting one of these into a pot with a plant? I can’t figure out how you get it to stand upright, and also how you avoid over potting since you need not only space for the root ball but also space for the pole. Thanks!

Hi there! I have some older videos I did under my moss pole playlist: kzitem.info/door/PLYt1-9zY5oEwLk6kQ2kNL_ZKvDFfA80lm The wire poles are pretty sturdy and I just center the pole and place the plant around the front. I usually start them small so they have the best chance at rooting into the moss and they don’t have a whole pot of roots to start :)

Look into “tin snips” they have a larger cutting surface. Much easer on your hands. Will cut though that like butter!

Great tutorial and thanks for heads up on hand pain. Husband just told me he can use his small grinder to buzz thru it. Yay😁 All my plants are still young as Ive grown everything from cuttings. At what point are they ready for a pole. Like if mine only have 2 or 3 Leafs (pothos) is that too small?
@plantsbymelissa
Жыл бұрын
Thank you! Haha that beats cutting by hand for sure! It’s best to start small so they can attach into the moss earlier. Older nodes have a harder time attaching. Cuttings can take awake to climb but still are great to start with. If you have more top cuts or if they have new growth starting already then they will grow faster 😊

Hello there, it’s me again 😬 How do you decide between the plastic pole or the wire? And also, have you tried to use coconut coir? I’ve heard they are more eco friendly, but not sure if they have the same effect. Thank you! 😘

I need to be more mindful of keeping the moss poles moist. I made some for my monstera adansonii plants. Hoping they will attach to the poles.

It's hard to keep them moist sometimes. Mine go dry all the time but the better you are at keeping them hydrated the more the aerials are encouraged to grow into the pole. I have a decent growing environment here and I'm still struggling lol.

My advice is to use water bottles with a hole in cap to keep moss moist :) you can also chose how fast you want the drop by opening and closing the bottle abit.

I have the wire from your old method; before you began using this kind from ACE. Should I toss the old one, and purchase from my local ace? What are the differences?
@plantsbymelissa

the older poles I made were from a plastic type material. Any coated hardware cloth should work. I get mine at ace because they have the 3' x 5' size I need :)

Why not use coated wire/garden-wire instead of zip-ties? Then you can re-use the wire where as zip-ties are one use only.

The New Zealand besgrow spagmoss is great quality but a little pricey! I usually get the better gro orchid moss it's cheaper and still works great for poles. I get mine at big box stores.
